About Me

Hello! I'm James. I was born in Cape Town (South Africa). I have recently started a PhD in Gothenburg, Sweden and I'm keen to some more of Europe while I'm based here!

What I want from life is to see, experience and understand as much of the world as I can. For me, a big part of this is to understand natural world which is why I studied and am continuing to study natural sciences. But it also involves having novel experiences, seeing new parts of the world, eating new and delicious foods, drinking black coffee and listening to great music. This is what I enjoy most about travelling. There is always novelty and new things to learn and experience.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I love to discover new places especially from the perspective of locals. I think it really enriches the experience and allows you to create a network of friends throughout the world. I also really love showing people where I live. I think being a tourist in your own city can be as good as seeing places that are completely new.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: Right now I'm listening to a lot of folk and jazzy poppy stuff. Most recently, I have been into Fionn Regan, Tom Misch, Rubblebucket, Sidestepper However, this is subject to change and I listen happily to a wide variety of music. All time favourites that I listen to to death: Paul Simon and The Beatles (big fan)

Books: I mostly read non-fiction but I also love fantasy and science-fiction. Right now I'm interested in human origins so I'm reading some popular science books about it.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I hope to share with hosts enthusiasm for their city and country, good conversation, good food and perhaps some music if they're into it. I am a very mediocre guitarist and bassist but it's something I love to do with people. I can share my expertise in natural science and, hopefully, friendship.
