First and foremost, I am a writer. You can read some of my work here: www.facebook.com/jameslewishuss. I am also a teacher and a martial artist. I currently live in La Paz, Bolivia, where I teach English, aikido, and karate.
My research centers on the nature of the human mind and how its mysteries are revealed through literature. To that end, I depend largely on studies of mysticism, linguistics, and psychology of consciousness, among other fields, drawing largely from Julian Jaynes's theory of the bicameral mind. I consider myself a linguistic mystic, a moniker I had to invent for myself.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I hope to use Couchsurfing while I travel around South America. I live alone in a nice, two-bedroom apartment in Calacoto, San Miguel, the best neighborhood in La Paz, and I'm happy to offer the extra space to fellow travelers.
As a host, Couchsurfing has been great. I have had some very nice guests and made some new friends. I look forward to meeting more people and making more friends. I haven't had much luck as a guest, but I'll keep trying.
I study and practice martial arts. I write poetry and novels. I teach English. I work out. I like to dine on local food; I like to hike and explore; I like to go out for drinks. I like to meet people from other countries and cultures, and I like intelligent conversation. I seek out new experiences wherever I go, and I love adventure.

Music, Movies, and Books
I listened to an eclectic mix, including alternative rock, rap/hip-hop, jazz, classic rock, and way too much Wu Tang Clan, among other things.
I love film, and I used to teach film criticism, so my taste in genres is wide, though selective.
I'm an English teacher, so books are my thing, but I prefer non-fiction to fiction, especially books about philosophy, psychology, consciousness, and linguistics.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I swam with sting rays in Grand Cayman. Twice!
