About Me

CURRENT MISSION

... to explore knowledge, meet people, play music, and laugh.

ABOUT ME

I'm forever a student, it seems - still studying philosophy now at PhD level! I'm new to Couchsurfing--both the site and the concept--but the site has come highly recommended to me from friends.

PHILOSOPHY

Not too keen on this section! I'm not sure I've got a set personal philosophy. If push comes to shove though, it would be to be open and critical at the same time. When we're honest, open, and critical I find we're better able to laugh at ourselves. And humour should be a consequence of any philosophy!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

No experience on this site, though I've been at friends' places when they've been hosting, and met interesting Couchsurfers that way.

Interests

- Philosophy (naturally, given my occupation!);
- Music: listening and playing, going to gigs sometimes.
- Socialising: pubs, the occasional club, debates, nice cafes and tearooms;
- Travelling: been to a variety of places as listed on here, but my favourite place has undoubtedly been Berlin!
- Sport: football (watching and playing), Muay Thai (Thai Boxing), mixed martial arts (watching);

Music, Movies, and Books

- Music: both listening (alternative folk, rock, indie, techno, house, and much more besides-I'm not fond of genres, really) and playing (guitar/singing). Examples of artists I like: Radiohead, Four Tet, Aphex Twin, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Wilco, King Creosote, Joanna Newsom, Ludovico Einaudi, and Rodriguez;

- Films: I'm not a 'film buff', I tend instead to just watch whatever I stumble across. I'm more of a serial TV show consumer, so I'm a big fan of certain comedy shows (Curb Your Enthusiasm, Seinfeld, I'm Alan Partridge, The Office, Brass Eye, Snuff Box) and dramas (Deadwood, The Wire, Dexter, Breaking Bad, Oz, Game of Thrones).

- Books: Too much of my book-reading is philosophy related, I'm afraid! My favourite philosophers are (later) Wittgenstein, Gilbert Ryle, Heidegger, and Thomas Reid. Non-philosophy wise, I recently enjoyed reading Austen's 'Pride & Prejudice' and Dostoevsky's 'The Idiot'.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Climbed through luscious waterfalls and mountains in North-West Cameroon.

Teach, Learn, Share

I play guitar and can teach it informally; I've taught conversational English language to Japanese students (though I don't speak Japanese); I teach philosophy, so can always chat about that!

I'd like to master French and German before I get old - at the moment I'm no more than a novice!

..and I'd share wisdom if I had it; in default of that, a good laugh or two.

Countries I’ve Visited
