About Me

Re-acclimatise to Ireland after a year in America

Two Irish guys - a writer and a photographer - travelling the US and Canada over 3 months gathering stories and photos.

A work in progress. Likely to descend into cliche at the first word, so I'll leave this be for the moment.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Just surfing for the moment, but do plan on restoring the karmic balance this summer by hosting from my home city. Sam's mum already hosts couch-surfers regularly in the misty hills of rural Kerry, Ireland.

So far couchsurfed in Nantes (France), Montreal, Quebec, New Brunswick, Maine, and Boston, and have nothing but fond memories.

Right now, Vladimir Nabokov, Alfred Hitchcock, sorting my life out, Frank Ocean, Samuel Beckett, kissing girls, audio recording, travel writing, speaking French and German fluently (someday), making art (someday), drinking Old-Fashioneds (now), not getting depressed about the future of the earth (ever).

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm pretty hooked on hip hop - I rap along embarrassingly to everything from Ol Dirty Bastard to Schoolboy Q. To make a grand, controversial statement, I think it's the most vital form of poetry alive today.

Movies: I like the way Hitchcock's plots are so slack-free. I loved 2001: A Space Odyssey. I loved Black Swan and Shame for the same theatre-like crackle of electricity they created in the audience. The Hustler (1961) is a cool film.

Nabokov's Speak, Memory stands out as the best book I've read in the past year. I heard him recently described as a "Russian Creep", and there's a lot of truth in that, but damn, he writes good sentences.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Lived rent-free in Harlem, New York for nine months.

Went to the 2006 World Cup in Germany when I was 16 with two school friends.

Hitch-hiked and Wwoofed through France for a summer.

Teach, Learn, Share

How to make a good Old-Fashioned.
How to pour the perfect pint of Guinness.
How to use a semi-colon.
How to make an Orange, Fennel and Chorizo risotto.

I would love to learn a few poems and/or songs by heart.
Origami would also be cool.

Countries I’ve Visited

Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Morocco, Spain, Switzerland

Countries I’ve Lived In

Ireland, United Kingdom, United States
