About Me

My name is Janko, and I come from Serbia. I am craving all kinds of adventures. I enjoy reading, hitchhiking, and doing sports. Currently, I am a master's university student of sociology in Washington D.C. and occasional valet, English teacher, dogsitter, security, bartender - graduate student hustle :)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I am on couchsurfing because I think the best travels are the ones that are not predictable and usual. I consider travelling by hitchiking and couchsurfing simultaneously maturing and very entertaining experiences. There is no better way to meet the country and feel the spirit the area you travel that to meet, spend time and experience how do the locals live.

Music, Movies, and Books

My favourite genres are rap and rock. Regarding movies, its hard to tell, some of the directors I really respect are Almodovar, Tarantino, Kubrick, Woody Allen ... In general, my favourites are dramas and ones that are clearly politically engaged movies. Some of the authors I enjoy reading are John Fante, Ernest Hemingway, Alexander Hemon, Haruki Murakami . Also I often read political theory.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

A thing I am proud of is an English teahching project I have done for the mentally disabled people. It was lot harder that I thought it is going to be, and not because of English, but because it was emotionally difficult to see people being aware they do not have the abilities other people have and them being so grateful to me and my friends who were teaching with me. At the same time the experience was very awarding and hard for all of us and it was not about English at end, we saw the most important things was that those people were treated equal and with some attention the usually do not get.

Teach, Learn, Share

I am eager to learn about other people's cultures, everyday life, about how their local communites function, what are the values they appreciate and towards which goals they are striving to.

What I Can Share with Hosts

What I can offer in return are my friendliness, my English knowledge, my humble political activist experiences and travelling experiences of course.
