I'm a history student at the University of Amsterdam and hope to finish my bachelor at the end of 2016. Currently I'm following a minor in American History.

Before I started studying I've been traveling for several years in different parts of the world. I've lived and traveled in Australia and New Zealand for 1,5 years, with a 6 month working stay in Sydney. After that I've traveled around South-East Asia and China for several months. Over the years I've traveled in many European countries, reaching as far as the Norwegian fjords, the Balkans and the Atlantic coast of Portugal.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

As part of a minor course, which focusses on the developments of metropolitan areas in the United States and their influence and place in American history, I will be visiting Chicago with a group of teachers and fellow students in the first week of june 2016. The course has a particular focus on the remarkable position of Chicago in in the history of the United States. After that I will visit Boston and New York City by myself to learn some more about these other two major historical places.

During my travels hitch-hiking has often been my way of transportation by choice. Besides the financial benefits I believe it gives me the best opportunity to get to understand the people of the countries I'm visiting. But since I only have one week in the United States after visiting Chicago and I will just visit large urban areas, couch surfing will be a better option this time.

Music, Movies, and Books

Since a young age I've been interested in music. I'm a guitar player and singer and try to play the banjo. I learned to play by practicing and listening to old blues and folk music. In the beginning of my twenties I started to get interested in traditional Jamaican music as ska, rocksteady, reggae and dub. Together with friends I've tried to bring these genres together with blues and folk in a neo-traditional reggae style.
