About Me
Hello! My name is Jason Hung and I am from Taiwan! I studied Game Development and Design at Purdue University in the US. After graduation, however, I felt that I wanted to do something that is more about interacting with others for a living, so I am currently pursuing an English teaching certificate in hopes of becoming an English teacher.
As my graduating school grants me the opportunity to apply for the J-Find visa in Japan, I am taking this wonderful chance to visit Japan and hopefully find a great place to settle down and work at!
My Japan bucket list:
- Railroad travel around the country
- Visit all the horse racing race tracks
- Order at a local Japanese restaurant all in Japanese
- Attend a matsuri festival
- Make friends everywhere (hopefully in every prefecture)
- and more to come
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
Last year, my mom had a scare with cancer. She recovered, fortunately, but that experience really opened my eyes to just how mortal and fragile we human beings really are. We could be here one day, and be gone the other… Just like that.
I am 24 now, and am going to be 25 in May of 2026. You may think I’m still young and I’d agree with you since I still feel that I’m a child mentally, but let’s face it, I’m growing up and getting old, and that scares me. I am terrified of growing old and one day leaving this world.
With that said, I decided that I am not going to live a life with any regrets. I want to be the decision maker, and not just live day by day mindlessly. So here I am, with a Japanese visa in hand, ready to explore Japan and hopefully fulfill one of my dreams of making a living in Japan. It is now (as of 2/20/2026) 6 months since I’ve started actively learning Japanese and making an effort to connect with Japanese people, and I am loving it every single day. It is a breath of fresh air waking up every day and learning new ways to see the world through another language.
I am super excited about my journey to Japan, I know I will surely have a blast. But that doesn’t mean that I am not worried about where to go, where to eat, where to stay, what to say to people… After all, I’ve only got a couple months of Japanese and youthful enthusiasm (naively) under my belt.
So! I am on this platform to hopefully make wonderful friends that can aid me in my Japan journey. Help quell my anxiety, even just a little bit. If you are able to message with me, talk with me, hang out with me, or even host me (!) that would be super amazing, and I will be forever grateful to you!
Interests
I am a big music lover. I love guitar, bass, and I’ve always wanted to learn how to play the drums.
I love games so we can talk about gaming if you also play games.
I am close to getting certified for TESOL English teaching. I am always happy to teach you English!
Sports I like: golf, basketball, baseball, volleyball (but I’m pretty bad at this)
- baseball
- basketball
- golf
- bass guitar
- good conversation
Music, Movies, and Books
Since I play the bass, I love music with sick bass lines. This includes Funk, Rap, R&B, Soul, J-Pop, and many others. I’m always open to listening to new music.
If I were to pick one favorite song however, it would have to be Money Trees by Kendrick Lamar.
I’m not exactly a big movie guy, but I’m always happy to go to the movies.
For books, I am currently reading Thinking, Fast And Slow by Daniel Kahneman. It is all about his psychological discoveries. I love science and learning about science so I am always down for adding another science-y book to my bookshelf.
Other things I am reading are Japanese literature and news since I am actively learning Japanese. Everyday I try to use an app called Todaii Japanese to read the day’s news in Japanese.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Not much yet, but… if I can make a decent living in Japan, that would be amazing!
What I Can Share with Hosts
If you can host me, I will for sure aim to be the best guest I can be. I can help pay for dinner, help with chores around the house, and I will for sure bring you some gifts or お土産.
I can talk with you in English and hopefully you can talk with me in Japanese since I’d like to improve! I can play music on the guitar or bass if you have one! Let’s play or hangout! I’m always down to have some fun!
