About Me

Hello,

I’m Javi!

I’m an environmental design student looking to experience people and place, and how one shapes the other. I’m passionate about meeting new people, getting to learn what motivates and lights them up, and how they’ve overcome the odds. Some of the most powerful conversations I’ve had are with strangers who become temporary friends, and at times end up becoming long term ones as well. Whether it’s through a shared meal, a walk around the city, or over a cup of coffee, I’m up for it all!

I’m respectful of space, and am happy to lend a helping hand with any home related matters.

Let’s get to know each other (:

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I’ve joined CouchSurfing after a friend recommended it to me when I told him I was traveling, I have never heard of this community before otherwise. I love people, conversation, and connection. I seek to understand people, what motivates them, and get to experience them and learn about their passion and share a cultural/personal exchange. I’m very fond of how deeply you can get to know new people while traveling. I believe maybe this is why I’m joining the community, to make meaningful connections along the way.

I’m also conducting research regarding communities that border open-pit mining operations. I grew up in an industrial mining area with some shady practices. The mining infrastructure enigmatically loomed over me as a kid, and I felt their presence was as impactful to my life in some way but I couldn’t really understand how.

Eventually I grew tired of the enigma, and sought to demystify its presence. It came with a lot of baggage. Suddenly I became very aware of local (and national) corrupt policies, paid out local politicians, and serious environmental/pedestrian health concerns.

Because I live in a highly industrialized area, it was a fairly hostile place to get anywhere on foot. So before I got my license, I was pretty much stuck at home. It wasn’t until I found refuge at a local park (after I gained the ability to drive) that I saw the importance and need for meaningful public space. Anywho, now my research is transforming into community engagement and developing a community advocacy plan to help rezone some industrial areas into recreational spaces.

People are at the heart of my work, and we need each other to keep going in such times. So let’s connect, engage, and see what we may discover!
