About Me
Hi, am Jeremiah. In 2014 I completed my Public Health Degree in Kampala. For my dissertation I researched on the Utilization of Maternal Health care services among women of the reproductive age in the rural area of Mutoto near Mbale. My studies found very high levels of illiteracy, poverty and high maternal and infant mortality. The roads and steep terrain were isolating the community. Once I qualified as a Public Health Advocate and as a social worker I decided to move to Mutoto to find a way to help. I held community meetings to discuss my findings and established that access to a health facility and school was a priority in this remote area. I decided to open a non-profit private school, charging very small fees to cover some costs. Most importantly, it is situated right in the heart of the community. We opened in May 2017 and currently have 402 pupils from the surrounding area. There are 12 teachers and 4 support staff working with us who I pay from my own salary from another job. The schools buildings are temporary structures in need a lot of work, and I would love to expand one day to include a play area. To address the infant and maternal mortality rates I also have bought land and laid foundations for a small health centre very close to the school. In the future the health centre will provide antenatal care and safe deliveries services for the women in the Mutoto and the surrounding area. Recently we have started a health funding scheme for mothers who are in the reproductive age we save for health and safe delivery.
