When traveling, I am almost always bicycle touring with Lisa, or taking an adventure with Lisa and sometimes our teenage son, Sebastian:

Jim: I love riding my bicycle. All types of riding, but my favorite is cyclocross and bicycle touring. When not traveling I teach. I have taught middle school mathematics, 2-year college mathematics (currently), conversational English in Japan for two years, and 3 weeks of all content areas to 5th graders in Tanzania, Africa. I love talking with people, sharing stories, learning new things, and experiencing new places. If interested about one of my adventures long ago you can read my book A Simpler Time (available on Amazon)...I can't promise it is good. :) I eat about anything.

Lisa: I love my family, riding bikes, and yoga! I also love my work, designing custom playgrounds for a firm called Play by Design. I get to share my passion of architecture with kids and communities all over the world. When I'm not designing playgrounds, I'm teaching yoga and pilates at a retirement community. I also like being around our teenage son, when he'll let me :) Our family has enjoyed many travels together, always humbled by the kindness of strangers, exchanging stories, and great big hugs. I am a vegetarian.

The reason we use couchsurfing.com and warmshowers.org is that we love meeting new people, learning about their viewpoints on life, and hearing their stories about travel and life. Through hosting many people cycling across the USA we have expanded our world of friends and it has led us to bicycle touring in Europe to visit them! In my mind, these hosting networks have expanded kindness and humanity, and I believe these sites are some of the best resources the internet has ever provided. We want to share our kindness and love for life and receive these similarly from others.
