About Me

I'm a husband and father of 5 children. I'm a geek through and through and love almost everything related to computers, gaming (rpg, console, pc, board), music, and movies.

I also love rafting, canoeing, and anything dealing with water.

My family is very easy going and my children are very well behaved. They don't scream, or throw temper tantrums. They love meeting new people too!

PHILOSOPHY

I am open-minded, love hearing other people's perspectives, non-judgmental, and easy to get along with.

I don't wait to earn respect, I demand it. Conversely, I give respect to everyone until they lose it. You don't need to prove anything to me. I assume you are awesome until you demonstrate otherwise!

I hate drama and dislike those that create it. Can't we just have a beer and laugh instead?!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I love hosting folks. I hope to host many, many more interesting people. So far, we've had nothing but good experiences with surfers. I hope to try surfing someday myself.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Hosted Alex and Andrew... great guys and some seriously free spirits. I envy their ability to throw caution to the wind and just explore the world! We shared beers and played Rock Band. Next time they come, I hope to hear them play some music.

Hosted David from the Netherlands for a week. Super nice fellow... many meals together and we even caught the Portland Rose Festival Parade on accident! My kids say that he plays a mean game of Super Smash Bros.

Hosted Patrick, an entrepreneur from Nova Scotia. A great guy who gets way, way too many emails. He played some board games and we hooked him on Firefly.

Hosted many others from all over! So far, nothing but good experiences!

Interests

I'm a big geek (literally) and love computers, home theater, sci-fi, and all manner of games (board, video, rpg). I love OS X, Windows, and Linux equally well. And for the record: Macs *are* PCs.

I also love the great outdoors. Camping, rafting, and canoeing. I hope to do more hiking with friends as soon as I can afford some gear.

Music, Movies, and Books

I am a movie and TV show fanatic. I love watching and discussing movies and TV shows.

Princess Bride, Serenity, Super Troopers, Sean of the Dead, Wedding Singer, Lord of the Rings, Life is Beautiful, and anything by Mel Brooks or John Hughes.

Firefly is hands-down my favorite show. Other favorites include Doctor Who, Buffy, Angel, Battlestar Galactica, Game of Thrones, and Farscape.

Besides dork shows, I love Arrested Development, Freaks and Geeks, Burn Notice, Supernatural, Greys Anatomy, Lost, and The Office.

Music
I am a big fan of Flogging Molly and the Dave Matthews Band. I also enjoy Barenaked Ladies, Dead Can Dance, and a lot of movie soundtracks.

Books
Favorite author is Bill Bryson and his book "Sunburnt Country" is my favorite. It's a must read if you ever want to go to Australia.

I love the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, the Walking Dead graphic novels, and many others.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The birth and growth of my five children. Watching their development from a wee babe into independent thinkers is amazing.

In terms of places, I particularly loved the British Museum and considered it one of the most amazing places I've visited.

Teach, Learn, Share

I am a wiz with computers and home theater stuff.

I am a photography noob and would love to learn from folks that know more than I do! I have tons of pictures up on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jimgoings/sets/

What I Can Share with Hosts

My love for sour beer.
