ABOUT ME

I recently earned a doctorate in computer science and spent the gap between school and a career bicycle touring around Europe. Afterwards I spent a few months traveling around the US visiting parks and cities. Now I'm living in Portland serving as the CTO of a small software company. I like fancy beer, reading, bicycles, and anything related to the outdoors. Lately I've been getting into mountaineering. I prefer to invest my time either in nature or in a dense, cultured, urban environment. When I'm not working I spend a lot of time socializing at the local coffee shops and breweries. If the local arts scene has an event, I'll go. If I can get out of town for the weekend, I'll be en route.

PHILOSOPHY

Never stop learning, stay active, eat well, keep an open mind, protect the environment, use less, and do more. Be the change you want to see in the world.

I read a lot of nonfiction science books about information theory, evolution, complexity theory, math, and physics.

I enjoy films by Tarantino. I don't own a TV, but I manage to keep up with Game of Thrones.

I listen to a lot of ambient/electronic music and baroque. Boards of Canada, Röyksopp, Beck, Bach, Vivaldi, and Chopin are a few of my favorites.

I never miss Radiolab or TAL on the radio.

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

I saw the final launch of the Space Shuttle. I stayed with a big group of Couch Surfers that week and I'm pretty sure it's the most fun I've ever had.

I can talk at length about beer and bicycles but I still have much to learn about each. I really enjoy talking about anything related to science, and I love meeting people who can teach me something new, or cause me to think about something in a new or different way. This has been my favorite part of couchsurfing. I've learned so much from people with different and interesting backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. I love learning about the local history and traditions, too (when traveling far away from home). As far as teaching, if your computer is acting up I may be able to show you a thing or two (especially if you run Linux). I'm usually pretty current on topics of physics and cosmology, too, but really only in the arm-chair science-journalism sense.
