About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To sharpen my writing and editing skills, and have many new experiences with my wife Karine.

ABOUT ME

My eyes are blue, my hair is dark brown & my cheeks are rosy. I have powerful lungs and a good grasp of the English language, so I use those two things often — to laugh and write earnestly. I find many things in life funny or intriguing, but I love to read and ski most of all. To do both at the same time is heaven. I write for online publications, magazines, newspapers and companies.

PHILOSOPHY

As a writer, my philosophy is to comfort the afflicted & afflict the comfortable. As a human being, we're all here to help each other get through this, whatever it is.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I intend on making a good name for surfers. Not only can I be a great tenant, but I'm happy to do anything to maintain the home I am so graciously welcomed in. I will wash dishes, walk the dog & vacuum. I am also a story-teller by trade and I'm ready to accumulate all the tales of surfing couches so we can share this community with the world.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

My experience with hosts and fellow surfers has been nothing but positive & fun. I've met people who welcome others into their homes from anywhere in the world with as much hospitality as a close friend. To feel part of such a community is both special & heartwarming.

Interests

What I care about I write about. I report on issues and events of all kinds, anything that makes up the human experience. I regularly contribute to Ottawa Magazine, Carleton Now, Mountain Life, and Exclaim! My work has also appeared in The Ottawa Citizen, Ottawa Showbox, Herd Magazine, Wolfgang's Tonic, Career Options, The Overtone, Damn Magazine, Quill & Quire, and Capital.

Music, Movies, and Books

Recently I read Patrimony by Philip Roth. I recommend it. Anything by Ryszard Kapuschinski, Fyodor Dosteovsky, Kurt Vonnegut, Philip K Dick, and Hunter S Thompson. My favourite author is Flann O'Brien.

I'm a big fan of all types of music: http://exclaim.ca/writers/joseph_mathieu

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've been very fortunate to heli-ski in the Purcell mountain range of British Columbia, to canoe and portage from Lake Opinicon to Manotick over four days, and to have hitchhiked all over Canada, but my biggest adventure was from Vancouver to Calgary. Stayed with great couch surfers along the way!

What I Can Share with Hosts

Karine & I are both curious and outgoing, respectful and friendly. We love to share recipes and recommendations in food, music and art.
