About Me

Heya guys,
my name is Johanna. :)
I'm 22 years old and I'm currently studying veterinary medicine in Hanover, Germany. Among being busy with studying, I LOVE to travel and meet new people. I think only while I'm travelling I can be totally free. The world is such a huge place with so many great things which need to be discovered and experienced! Meeting new people from around the world is one of those great treasures. Listening to their stories and experiences is awesome, even tho making new friends is the best part!

I'm a happy, open minded person and might be a bit bubbly as well ;) I love music and arts and enjoy every kind of outdoors activities, like outdoor sports or camping trips. Generally I would say that I'm pretty active and curious about new things!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

As I already said, it's always great to meet new people while travelling! To my mind, Couchsurfing is one of the best platforms to do so! Especially meeting locals is awesome. It's the best way to get to know new cultures, the people and the places where I'm staying in a personal, friendly and authentic way :)
Furthermore I have to admit, that money is always tight while studying even tho I try to save as much as I can by working additionally. Therefore Couchsurfing gives me the chance to travel on a low budget, which I appreciate as well!

Music, Movies, and Books

Favourite music:
Generally I listen to literally everything. And I can't say that there's any music genre which I haven't listened to (except "German Schlager" haha). Currently I listen a lot to Indie Folk (The lumineers, The paper kites, Mumford and sons, Bukahara, Feist, Radical Face, Tom Odell, etc.). I also love singer songwriter like Jamie n Commons or Barns Courtney. But that's just one part. On the other side, I love listening to every kind of Rock (especially progressive/ stoner rock at the moment) or genres like Electroswing. So there's actually no limit or genre I'm not interested in to check out new musicians.

Favourite books:
I've been a bookworm since I'm a little child. Even tho I'm actually grown up now, I still love reading novels for young people, mostly historian ones, fantasy ones or thriller. I started to read "the swarm" by Frank Schätzing. Great book by the way ;)

Favourite movies:
There are a lot of good movies out there. The only thing a good movie needs to have is a good story and maybe a creepy, unforeseen plot twist. Thriller are great! But I also like comedy ones or a good drama. Watching movies really depends on the mood I guess.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

So I was in New Zealand in 2013 and we rented a camper van for Christmas to explore the South Island. My friends and me might have been a little chaotic and not quite good prepared but anyway... So we were driving through the mountains that one evening on 25th December, trying to find a DOC (which are those campsites where you don't need to pay for it and where's just a pit latrine and nothing else). We found one close to a river (really really nice!!!). After getting settled, we wanted to cook our dinner. We had a small camping stove to boil our rice (The only food which was left - wanted to do the grocery the next day). So the problem was, that we had not enough gas to keep the stove going. After discussing whether it's better to go to bed without dinner or to look for another campsite with a proper kitchen, we decided to move on to find a better camping site. We wanted to drive to the next town. Unfortunately the mountain pass was closed due to some rocks, which were fallen on the street. That pass was the only way to reach the other town. The petrol, however, wasn't enough to go back to the town we came from and there was only one camping site left, where we could go to next to the campsite we came from. We thought it was one of those expensive "outdoor lodges" where only rich people stayed. But we had no other chance so we were camping there. The problem was, we were so late that there was no receptionist who could tell us whether we were allowed to stay and how much it would cost to stay for a night so we had to wait for the morning to expect the worst. Once we were settled again, we looked for the kitchen and started to boil our rice. While my friends were getting the cutlery and plates and stuff, I looked after the rice. The woman next to me, who was cooking as well (some delicious looking spaghetti bolognese), suddenly asked me whether the rice would be the only thing we would eat. I explained her the whole story and both of us kept on cooking, talking about our trips and stuff. We even ate together. After the dinner, we were about to go to bed when the woman came to us again holding a huge basket with food in her arms. She told us that she and her husband didn't need that food because it would expire soon anyway and they still had enough for themselves. They even gave us a whole pineapple (one of my favourite fruits ;)). We were so happy!
That really was a Christmas miracle for us! I mean the women didn't know us and nevertheless she gave us a whole bunch of food! I think that's one way to show the great things about travelling - the great bounding between travellers! It's one huge community where everyone belongs together and that makes it so great to travel!
