COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I first traveled around the island of Puerto Rico for 2 weeks relying on hostels and Couchsurfing.org. Between the two I couldn't imagine a more eye-opening or authentic way to travel around and experience a new place. We were also able to find employment in Kazakhstan at a language school through our host on a brief visit to the southern city of Almaty.

As hosts we have been able to showcase both the well-known tourist destinations of Memphis as well as the more local-centric restaurants and bars around the eclectic midtown area where we reside. Even with our limited hosting experience we've been able to meet awesome people from 4 different countries with hugely different life experiences and have loved sharing ours as well.

Travel, live music, local food and drink. Love to enjoy life and the beauty of nature and the simple things. Working professional hippie couple love to grow and cook our own food and walk/bike around town to take in music and food.

Music- We have an extensive vinyl collection that's been growing for 10 years. Favorite albums: Bringing it all back home- Dylan, Rust never sleeps- Neil Young, People's instinctive travels and the paths of rhythm- A tribe called quest, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain- Pavement, Muswell Hillbillies- The Kinks, Heartbreaker- Ryan Adams and many more mostly rock, soul, folk and country influence

We've been living in Memphis for about a year now now and have been loving the classic soul music (STAX recording studio) that the city gave birth to.

Movies- Love classic + foreign films. Favorite directors: Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini, Jean-Luc Goddard, Jean-Pierre Jeunet,
Other favorites: B Horror Movies, Woody Allen
Favorite TV: Broad City, Game of Thrones, Arrested Development

Books- My wife was an English major so she loves reading and literature of all kinds. In the past year she's read Absalom, Absalom! by William Faulkner, The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishuguro, and Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston- each dealing with issues of identity and class in their own way.

Swam in the original Fountain of Youth; a Bioluminescent bay in Puerto Rico. Had the honor of eating a sheep's head at a Kyrgyz coy soy.

My wife Alexandra was a volunteer with US Peace Corps and she lived in a village in Kyrgyzstan for 2 years. It was amazing and incredibly eye opening to live with developing world standards (no running water, heat etc.) and to be immersed in another language and culture.

Insight into Central Asia, a little known and scarcely travelled part of the world (it's more than just Mongolia) from my Peace Corps times.

Preparing a meal together if you are open to it, like to cook world food, mostly vegetarian. Like to experiment with new tastes and ideas in the kitchen.
