Hi, my name is Jonathan but everyone calls me Jono!

I grew up in South Africa and after university spent 3 years working for a technology company. During that time I did remote work, so in the past two years I have travelled to about 20 countries. Now I have quit my job to travel for the rest of the year.

I have developed a travel addiction and want to collect as many global perspectives as possible before I start my own company. I really like the quote from Socrates, "let him who would move the world, first move himself."

I am an extremely curious and friendly person. Easy to talk to and I like trying everything, especially new food.

Of all the countries I have been to, Japan has been my favourite, which is why I was there in Spring this year and am going back in Autumn. Let's make memories and forge great relationships!

我为什么加入 Couchsurfing

When I was working and travelling, I was mainly staying in Airbnbs because I needed good WiFi and enough space to do work. This was nice, but during that time I did not meet too many locals or other travellers.

Now that I do not need to work, I would like to spend some time in hostels meeting other travellers, and also some time in homestays or Couchsurfing.

I have never done Couchsurfing, but the Couchsurfing concept really appeals to me. Everyone on the platform seems to have a generous spirit and one day I would like to also open up my residence to travellers from around the world!

Music: I love classical music (favourite composer is Chopin), rock (alternative rock, math rock, and Japanese rock), and then old jazz and blues (like Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong). I also listen to anime soundtracks and a lot of EDM/techno.

Movies: In terms of Western movies, I usually watch Academy Award winning films, but also enjoy franchises like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. In terms of Eastern movies, I enjoy Japanese classics like Kurosawa films and pretty much everything made by Studio Ghibli.

Books: I read fantasy, classic fiction, and also a lot of non-fiction. I also read philosophy like Nietzsche and supernatural books like Murakami's works.

In 2020 I read 52 books in 52 weeks. This was during my final year of university, the pandemic, and at a time when I was also working a part-time job.

I can teach people about my country and also some of the topics I have studied like Artificial Intelligence, Psychology, and Philosophy.

I would like to learn about my host's childhood so I can compare things like societal expectations and education systems to my own country.

I can share interesting stories from my travels and also my taste in books, films, and music.

I can practice English with my hosts and teach them lots of things about my country South Africa, which has a fascinating history and which today is a country that is full of problems that most people cannot understand. I can talk about any topic and help around the house or cook a meal from my home country.

I think I will be a great guest. I am easy to talk to, I clean up after myself, and I am very independent no matter which country I am in, so I will not take up too much space.
