COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
huh, when i was a student we called it hitch-hiking - it's great fun and i can't imagine why anyone thinks it's dangerous (unless they read murdoch newspapers or watch television). well anyhow, lots of wonderful people gave me lifts, food to eat, things to remember, couches to sleep on, and showed me around the next day. so, given that no one seems to hitch any more and that i don't have a car, CouchSurfing might be a good thing.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
i had promised myself to read "the magus" (john fowles) for years, and finally did so on the beach while on holiday on the greek island of spetsai. reading the preface, i discovered that not only was the story set on that island, but that i was staying in the building in which fowles had worked as a teacher and which features extensively in the book. whoosh.
