About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Live life to the fullest, to seek after truths

ABOUT ME

61 year old divorced, content male, grounded, needing a place to sleep occasionally when staying in Eugene. Living in a burb of Portland, Happy Valley, and working in Portland. Member of CFI Portland Advisory Board, founded Secular Humanists of East Portland. Former college biology prof. Reads science, religion and philosophy. Recent lectures about evolution at conferences in the Northwest. Interested in origins and how they shape our worldviews. Avid downhill skier who discovered the Alps a few years ago. Nature photographer - living in the Northwest it's hard not to be! Dog lover, but cats can be interesting.

PHILOSOPHY

Metaphysical naturalism is my worldview, secular humanism my choice for values. These demand skepticism mixed with humbleness at what we don't know and awe of what we do.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Enjoy very much meeting new people and helping them with lodging expenses.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Have hosted at my home around Portland and have surfed in Eugene, Oregon

Interests

Physician, biologist, secular humanist. Non smoker, non drinker, no drugs. Loves to talk about the big questions in life and to dialog with others. I visit Eugene occasionally to spend a night or weekend with my daughter. Hike and downhill ski when I can. Definitely no drama and is respectful and thankful for those who would host me.

Music, Movies, and Books

Action movies, Sci-fi, thought provoking movies. Books that touch on proximal and ultimate questions of life. Good example would be Diamond's "Guns, Germs, and Steele".

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Downhill skied two weeks in the Alps. Spent a week in Haiti holding down the ED in the only trauma center in the country. Jumped out of an airplane. Road biked from Portland to Eugene. Have four degrees. Have four wonderful daughters. Oops - it said one. Sorry, I've lead a full life so far and I'm not done.

Teach, Learn, Share

Well rounded in most areas of science, especially biology and origins. Student of the Bible through Robert Price and Bart Ehrman. Some basic knowledge of philosophy and history. The humanities and art are not my strong areas. Former college teacher now a biologist practicing medicine (primary care).

What I Can Share with Hosts

Love of Portland, Oregon. Have lots of ideas for spending time in the Pacific Northwest from Seattle to the Redwoods of California.

Countries I’ve Visited

Canada, Finland, Germany, Greece, Haiti, Italy, Liechtenstein, Mexico, Nicaragua, Norway, Russian Federation, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom
