Because hotels are expensive and boring. Meeting people is part of the journey. It's always better when you can talk to someone who really knows an area you are not familiar with so that you can get more than just the "tourist" experience.

Honestly, we aren't looking for a place to sleep as much as we are looking for some running water to take a shower/use the bathroom/ and cook with :)
