Recently I hung out with a friend who's gotten into caving. On the first day we went to a cave that required that I shimmy backwards for thirty feet on my stomach into a tiny hole in the earth that only a few dozen people had ever entered. The next day we went to an abandoned mine that went on for literally miles underground -- vast halls underground, with endless rows of fifty-foot-diameter columns. I've never seen anything like either of these places, each solemn, peaceful, terrifying and gorgeous in their own way.
