About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Trying to see more of Europe, especially north and east

Interests

Music, old pop culture, reading all kinds of stuff
Traveling (of course)--I especially like visting places that most people wouldn't think of as vacation locales--places like Detroit and Cleveland, small towns in the American South (Augusta, GA! Danville, VA! Burlington, NC), neighborhoods in places like Istanbul or New York that are outside of the tourist districts, places that are out of the way, the places a lot of people consider the wrong place of town, places that have lots of old stuff, weird stores, weird places to eat, places that are decidedly out of fashion
Restaurants/food--Mexican, Thai, Cantonese, Korean, Russian, Jamaican, Italian, Southern, anything regional
I like riding bikes. I like hiking, but don't do it enough. I like swimming in lakes when they're warm. I like riding trains. I like buying mixtapes.

Music, Movies, and Books

I really enjoy music, have worked in college radio some (WXYC!) hip hop from the 80s and 90s, or from the last decade if it's good, sweet soul music, firme roles, disco, r&b, funk, old school house, electro, too many artists to name i've been trying to get in to Krautrock lately

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Working very hard over months to knock on doors, register people to vote, organize volunteers to help with the Obama election in the small, mostly conservative towns Rocky Mount and Burlington in North Carolina was a very powerful experience. It's hard to replicate the feeling of registering someone to vote who thought all along that he was banned from voting because he'd served time in prison.

Teach, Learn, Share

Geez, I don't know. I have all kinds of weird areas of knowledge. Barbecue. Regional cuisines of the U.S. East coast cities. Hip hop. Asian food (I'm good at eating it, not so good at making it). I did my dissertation on alternative youth consumer cultures in 1970s America, including black-owned record stores and radio stations, head shops, women's blue jeans, and singles bars.

Countries I’ve Visited

Belgium, Canada, France, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom

Countries I’ve Lived In

Germany, United States
