Overview
About Me
I'm Julia and I am a 22 year old history student who lives in Oxford. I am an open-minded person who would travel full time if I could!! I am a vegetarian, and I love reading. I try to learn something new every day.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I am on Couchsurfing because I think the way to best explore countries is to stay with locals, and I also love to talk to people and learn about different ways of life. I want to make friends from all around the world!!
Interests
I love travelling, literature and music. I believe there are always new places to be discovered, new music to listen to, and new stories to read. I have not read enough books, listened to enough music and travelled to enough places yet.
History is my passion, hence why I am studying it at university! I am particularly interested in the history of ideas, but I find most history interesting! I love visiting ancient cities and learning about the history that surrounds me, which is one reason why I chose to go to University in Oxford.
I am also really interested in politics. I believe passionately in equal rights and opportunity for all people, irrespective of race, nationality, gender, religion, sexuality and income. For this reason I wish to work in International Relations (eventually).
I love good food, and I want to sample the traditional food of every country I visit (or a vegetarian version of it anyway!) Indian and Thai food is my favourite, but I also have a lot of love for pizza.
I love singing and dancing, although I can't do either particularly well (especially under the influence of alcohol, which is generally when I attempt to do so). I used to be in a theatre group, and although these days I do not act, I love sitting in the audience at theatre performances.
I love tea, and will never say no to a cup.
Music, Movies, and Books
I love so many different types of music, so it is hard to choose a favourite! I love to listen to country, folk, jazz, dubstep, pop, rock, classical....the list goes on! I especially like music of the sixties; The Beatles, The Kinks, Jimi Hendrix...I am also a huge Taylor Swift fan!
My favourite movies are 'The Life of Brian' and 'V for Vendetta', but really I like most films as long as they aren't horror!!! I love the Harry Potter films and I like Marvel films, and Star Wars as well.
I watch more television shows than films. I love Game of Thrones, Friends, How I met your Mother, The Thick of It, Orange is the New Black, Doctor Who and Fawlty Towers.
I have so many favourite books....reading is one of my favourite things to do, and I have a personal collection of almost 1000 books. The books which immediately spring to my mind are 'The Book Thief', 'The Handmaid's Tale', '1984', 'The Help', the 'Game of Thrones' books and the 'Harry Potter' series. Usually I read historical books and biographies, as these help me with my university studies, but I also really like reading philosophical books, books about current affairs, mysteries and good-old fiction!
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
In 2015 I worked as an au pair in Italy, and when I arrived the daughter of the family spoke virtually no English. By the end of my stay we could hold basic conversations and she was starting to really understand me. Sharing the gift of language is the most amazing thing I have done.
Teach, Learn, Share
I love teaching English, and I love learning new languages. I would love to share my language with someone in return for learning some of their language.
I want to see the world as a local, so I would love it for a host to show me their city in a way only locals can.
What I Can Share with Hosts
I can help hosts with their English, I can bake fantastic cakes and I would love to just sit with my host over a cup of tea (or glass of wine!) and talk.
