ABOUT ME

Most people would probably describe me as quiet or serious when they first meet me. But with my friends I am loud, silly, and at times, very opinionated. I am definitely a feminist, but a man-loving feminist! I believe in everyone's freedom to be who they are, as long as they are not hurting anyone in the process. I can get along with almost anyone, and hold a conversation about almost anything. I keep an open mind about music, food, people, relationships, love, and life. I hope that doesn't sound cheesy.

I've been described as an old soul. I know I have a lot to learn.

Interests

I am really interested in the way region shapes cultures. I like to learn about how people live which helps me understand the ways that I am part of a web of culture in the US. Cooking and eating alone or with people is my favorite. I saw a sign recently that said "food is love!" which pretty much explains the way I think about food.

I like doing athletic things... I'm not very good at organized sports besides ultimate frisbee. But I like to workout a lot, and do outdoor activities like hiking and backpacking. I feel unbalanced if I'm not doing something active. But at the same time I can be extremely lazy and definitely know how to relax.

I'm interested in reading fiction and non fiction. My favorite author is Barbara Kingsolver. I am reading Shogun by James Clavell right not. The Secret Life of Plants is high on my list. I like reading things by and about women.

In the future I would like to take voice lessons just for fun. And I'd like to learn more languages. I know some French and Spanish. I'd like to learn Chinese, Russian, and Italian among many others.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

One of the most amazing moments of my life happened on the last day of a 28 day backpacking trip in the Talkeetna mountains in southern Alaska. We came down from the mountains on a July afternoon and were picked up by a bus driver along a small highway. He brought with him a breakfast of blueberry bagels with cream cheese and 2% milk for us. It was the MOST amazing, delicious food I'd ever tasted in my life. If clouds had a taste, I think they would taste like the milk that I drank. The food tasted so good because for the last months I existed on trail mix, pasta, rice, and water. The backpacking trip in itself was an amazing experience, but the deep appreciation I had for just simple food after we finished was what affected me. That breakfast made me realize how lucky I am for every meal I have and how the simplest thing are the most important.
