About Me

I want to meet new people to get perspective on life that I could never even imagine.

My Name is Julia Kerns, I will soon be 19 and entering my Sophomore year of College. I love meeting new people, and talking. Sometimes I have trouble getting outside of my comfort zone, and I feel that by traveling and/or hosting people, I can try new things and see the world like I've always dreamed. I'm currently studying International Affairs and Religious studies in college with a minor in Chinese. The only tentative plan that I have for after college is to hopefully join the Peace Corps and volunteer abroad, maybe also go to Graduate School.

I currently do not have a personal philosophy. My hope is to develop one sometime in the near future. I think that people over reach themselves in trying to be successful (by having lots of money, nice cars, or big houses), in my opinion what should really matter is being content with the way you live your life, mainly by being a good person. I dont have many philosophical ideas on WHY we should be good people, but I just feel that it is important for daily life.

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

The summer before I left Florida for college in Boston, I had a falling out with my family. For two weeks I couch surfed at my friends houses and stayed with whoever had a spare couch to offer me. Then I got a flight to MA and have been staying with both my cousin and my grandma during summers and holiday's. I loved couch surfing with my friends because it was touching that they were offering me places to stay, and were so kind about it.

Reading, trying to be healthy through eating better and exercise, Buddhism, random interesting stuff that I can find online, knitting, DIY items, working (I work a lot and I surprisingly enjoy it), volunteering (even though lately I havent done much), Blood Drives, learning about religions other than Catholicism/Christianity which I was raised in.

Music, Movies & Books

I love the Vampire Diaries, Say Yes to the Dress, Futurama, Gossip Girl, and that 70's Show- I know each of these can be considered "tv junk" but theyre my guilty pleasures. books: Siddhartha by Herman Hesse, Transform your life by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, the Harry Potter Series, the Blood Jack Pirate series, and just anything I pick up at the local library or on my kindle. Currently I'm looking at different religions so I have a lot of religious texts. Music- I literally will listen to anything, as long as I can bob to it, I'll like it.

One Amazing Thing I've Done

After the Boston Marathon Bombing, when the entire city was shut down on that Friday and the bomber was caught at around 8 or 9 at night, the majority of Northeastern students clamored onto the streets and just came alive. There was shouting, singing, flags waving, people dancing, and cheering for the cops that were half heartedly trying to restrain us. It was pretty beautiful.

Teach, Learn, Share

I have to offer my friendliness, and my willingness to go out and learn right alongside with whoever i'm hosting/staying with. I want to see new things, or even old things through new eyes. Plus I love hearing people's life stories.
