ABOUT ME

I heard about couch surfing in Sept 2008, registered and hosted a dozen people over four months. The experience was amazing and I was pleased to meet, and help out, a great bunch from five different continents.

Then I took a BIG journey of my own: 13 months and 14 countries from Vancouver to Buenos Airies. I couchsurfed in Canada, USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia and Peru. http://wanderingrob.blogspot.com

Now I am back in Sydney and trying to work out what happens next. Any ideas?

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I host, surf, attend events, talk about it to everyone (who seems nice) and have the new logo tattooed across my chest. One of those is not true.

Interests

Food (cooking it, eating it, craving it, reading about it and talking about it). I love to cook for surfers or my hosts when I'm staying. Expect something either Asian or Mediterranean... with a chance of a crossover meal of the two, sometimes called Modern Australian.

Music, Movies, and Books

British tunes are my favourites, from the classics of yesteryear (Beatles and The Stones), via the more underground music of my adolescence (Smiths and Billy Bragg) to Britpop (especially Pulp) and the latest and greatest from England (Arctic Monkeys), Scotland (Glasvegas) and even Wales (Manics). Throw a few Aussie modern icons in there (like the Presets) and the best of the USA (Killers and the like), and that's me.

Two authors dominate by bookshelf more than others: Paul Austeur and Maruki Murakami (funnily enough, neither are British, so I'm only a musical introvert). I also read a tonne of non-fiction, with Stalingrad being a stand out in that space.

The cinema is a regular visit for me. I try to go once a week. I loved Slum Dog Millionaire to bits and thought The Wrestler was harrowing, but brilliant. Just recently I watched to full version of Che. Phew, quite an ordeal.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

This is difficult - too many to choose. But a random amazing thing I did, a long time ago, was to travel for several hours down a remote river in the Northern Sumatran rainforest... in a rubber inner tube!

Teach, Learn, Share

I love this idea, but am more Luke than Yoda.

That said, I can teach English and I know a lot about marketing... largely useless though that is to most people.

Otherwise, if you want to learn how to solve cryptic crosswords, cook an excellent risotto or juggle... there I can help. Plus I know a tonne of card games.
