I never surfed a couch but I met many couch surfers both in my trips and in my home town Barcelona.

Don't be afraid and learn to accept things as they come, that's the best advice I can give to any traveler. Be open minded, don't look for what you already know, for what you already have in your home town, try to learn something from every place and culture you visit.
