About Me

I am curious mathematician that loves (speaking about, learning and teaching) languages and (making and listening to) music. I might carry some of the stereotypes that people have of mathematicians but timidity is not part of my inventory. Of course I can exercise polite restraint but I love to talk about everything from history, politics, social issues to music, sports and food.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Every journey you do where you stay at a hotel or an airbnb carries the danger to be ill-fated. You see the touristic things, eat the touristic food or even worse, you buy only the things you know at the supermarket. You stay in your bubble, your comfort zone. In my opinion, this is not what getting to know the world, a new place is about and not why I am travelling. It is the exchange with the people that makes travelling an enriching experience, you can talk about things that you see, that touch you, where you start to question yourself and learn something. And the wonderful thing about Couchsurfing is, that you even get the chance to give something back and world literally becomes your home and you make the world everyones home.

Music, Movies, and Books

As a child I was (and I guess I still am) a huge Harry Potter fan. But I insisted on the books. I used to listen to the (German) Harry Potter Audiobooks all the time so that I could quote most of their parts what then allowed me to read them all of them when I was studying portuguese at a really early state! Apart from that, I love Lewis Caroll for the wonderfully grotesque worlds he draw as well as utopias/distopias like 1984.
It is hard to say which movie is my absolute favorite but Marnie by Hitchcook certainly ranks high. And I have a weakness for all kinds of Studio Ghibli Movies.
My taste of music is quite broad and includes all kinds of rock and metal music from indie to death metal (during my time in school, I had several rock and metal bands myself), especially Nu Metal and samba, bossa nova, chanson, indie Pop and classical music. My absolute favourite band of all times was and will always be System of A Down and my favourite composer is Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

There are so many beautiful experiences with cultural exchange that I made but most certainly there is one that somehow continues and that sticks out. The people I stayed with when I went to Brazil after my time in school became my family. I see them each time they come to Europe and I returned to Brasil several times to stay with them, e.g. when I did an internship at the Goethe Institut. For them I am the German Cousin now and they are my Brazilian Family.

Teach, Learn, Share

I would not consider myself a great cook but I like it and am always happy to share some of the internationally less known German dishes. In exchange, I am always interested in learning foreign dishes!
As it is my field of study, I am always interested to talk about and share knowledge in mathematics and all related fields. Furthermore, I obtained a qualification as a German Teacher and also had some possibilities to teach it in a course for refugees and during an internship in Rio de Janeiro. Thus, I am more then pleased to give German lessons and on the other side, I am happy to learn your language.
