About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Try to see all that is good in all that I see, and leave things better than I found them, including myself. Be productive. Live well.

ABOUT ME

My background is wildlife biology and I've been very fortunate to have explored many amazing places through personal travel and work. Kenya, most of Central America, Peru, Chile, and most recently the Falkland Islands, South Georgia Island, and the Antarctic Peninsula - a very last-minute, serendipitous excursion that I couldn't pass up. Right now I am trying to carve a more stable career path in the marine sciences and constantly seeking to expand my credentials.

I love the ocean, solitude and tranquility, positive people, once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, adventure, travel, and captivating stories. I can just as easily keep to myself as I can socialize. And I am always looking to learn a new skill.

I currently work at the UNC Institute of Marine Sciences in Morehead City, NC. Last September Hurricane Florence flooded my rental in Beaufort, NC. Due to limited housing in this area and the short-term nature of my work, I have moved five difference times since the storm. But it has been character-building!

PHILOSOPHY

Have patience, integrity, generosity, and a sense of humor. Always ask questions. Politely.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've spent quality time in a variety of (sometimes questionable!) sleeping quarters, including military barracks, field trailers and sleeping bags. So, the nature of my work has kept me couch-less and living out of bags more often than not, but I can't wait to have a more permanent space to offer fellow surfers.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I discovered my first couch-surfing experience from a flyer posted in a Guatemalan hostel. I spent over a week aboard Poco A Poco, a Polynesian Catamaran, anchored in Rio Dulce!

I assisted Biff, a fellow couch-surfer, with some boat maintenance and enjoyed being literally rocked to sleep on the deck by the waves. Definitely one of the most unique couch-surfing opportunities out there and a great introduction to this community!

Interests

Everything about the natural world. Thunderstorms and lightning.

I dabble in landscape photography and hope to organize my photos enough to sell my work sooner rather than later.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Overnight train ride from Nairobi to Mombasa, Kenya through Tsavo Nat'l Park. The same railway featured in 'The Ghost and The Darkness'

12-day trek through the Cordillera Huayhuash in Peru, got a glimpse of the West face of Siula Grande...

Spent 21 days cruising around the Falklands, South Georgia Island, and the Antarctic Peninsula.

Teach, Learn, Share

I would love to learn pretty much anything anyone is willing to teach me.

One day I hope to be a more accomplished photographer and Spanish-speaker. I'm intrigued by do-it-youselfers who use their creativity to build things!

I am always eager to learn as much as I can about using natural methods to keep our bodies healthy and well.

What I Can Share with Hosts

A great whole foods meal, if you're up for it!
