About Me

Hello, I'm Karla!

I’m a curious traveler passionate about culture, gastronomy, and good conversations. I was born and raised in Mexico and worked for the last four years at an agricultural research institute, which allowed me to get to know different communities and learn about farming and food production. I also worked for nine years at a film festival, so I enjoy watching movies and chatting about them.

I will be traveling as a volunteer, preferably on farms or in artistic and community projects. I love learning new skills and connecting with people who share values of collaboration and creativity.

I love mezcal and can teach you about it, explaining why it's different from tequila. I also enjoy dancing Latin rhythms like salsa and bachata, so if you're interested, I can share some moves with you, or we can sing together. One of my favorite places will always be karaoke!

I’m not the best cook, but I’ll be happy to prepare something Mexican to share.

I’ve also lived in the US and Scotland.

If you host me, I promise to be a considerate guest and bring good energy. I can contribute to your projects or help with tasks. And if you're looking for recommendations about Mexico, especially Oaxaca, I’d be happy to share my favorite spots!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I’m on Couchsurfing to connect with locals and travelers who share a passion for learning, cultural exchange, and authentic experiences. In the past, I’ve hosted people and made lifelong friends, and I believe Couchsurfing is a great way to meet others with the same desire to make friends and explore the world. I think the best way to experience a new place is through the eyes of the people who live there, and Couchsurfing offers a unique opportunity to form meaningful connections and immerse myself in local cultures. I also enjoy sharing stories, learning new things, and offering whatever I can to enrich someone else’s journey.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: Timba is probably my favorite genre right now (have you heard of it?). Of course I like salsa, bachata, and reggaeton (Although the latter is heavily criticized). I love Dua Lipa and also music from the 70s-80s: Earth Wind and Fire, Rod Stewart, Bon Jovi.

Books (or authors): When God was a woman; Gabriel García Márquez; Søren Kierkegaard; T. S. Elliot.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Taking a leap of faith when quitting my job in order to travel as a volunteer and couchsurfing ;)

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can share my passion for cultural exchange and my love for Mexican traditions. From explaining the difference between mezcal and tequila to teaching you a few salsa or bachata moves, I'm always happy to connect through music and culture. I’ve lived in different countries and love exchanging travel stories and perspectives. While I’m not a professional cook, I’d love to prepare a homemade Mexican dish for you!

I also enjoy photography, so if you’d like, I can take some nice photos of you as a souvenir from our time together. Above all, I bring a positive attitude, curiosity, and an eagerness to learn from others.
