One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

A 12-year-old boy sat across from me, crying, shaking. "When I get frustrated, my brain just clicks.." He, blind with rage, had hit another boy. "But I like being calm, I don't like when it clicks." We talked about coping skills to get through dinner where they would share a table, about deep breaths and counting to ten. After the meal, he told me he had apologized to the other boy, and had received an apology in return. "No one threw anything, we had a nice meal."

Herb and I sailed around a corner on his motorcycle, hugging the side of the hill in Port-au-Prince. The lights in the tent city twinkled orange and yellow in the valley below as Herb's T-shirt flapped in the wind. "Want to go visit my mother's house in Cite Soleil?" he shouted over the engine.

I was waiting in a dim hallway in a small hospital in rural India. A nurse in a long white sari rushed out of the labor room and beckoned me inside. A woman writhed slowly on the table as the doctor reported centimeters of dilation. Minutes later, mother pushed, doctor pulled, and 6-pounds of blue baby were born into the fluorescent-lit cement room.
