ABOUT ME

I'm a cheerful guy who enjoys meeting people, but need my 'me time' also. I aspire to geek chic in all things, but am probably more of a nerd when it comes down to it. If you are trying spot me to meet up, I'm about 181cm, red hair, tend to have a beard, and big (running to downright chubby in winter when I hybernate more).

PHILOSOPHY

I think happiness is the most important personal goal, and that this means helping people around you be happy also. Also important is leaving the world at least slightly better than you found it, and being able to look after yourself and people dependent on you. Thats about all I've worked out about life so far.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've just joined up, and I'm looking forward to showing people my favourite things in Melbourne and giving advice about the rest of Australia (that I know about anyway!). Also looking forward to seeing how couchsurfing is for myself as a traveler, sounds like good stuff.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Complete Newbie at this point. My friends who have hosted and traveled in this community tell me good things, so looking forward to it.

Intereses

I like eating good food slightly more than cooking, but love both. I read widely and a lot, play Ultimate Frisbee (a slightly alternative competitive team sport using frisbees), and enjoy riding my bike to get around, and also to go touring. I play bass and guitar, and enjoy live music, but dont see enough. I enjoy theatre, particularly local small theatre stuff, and am currently taking an improvised acting class, mostly for fun. Enjoy Melbourne's many festivals - Film, and Comedy particularly.

My favorite things of late:
Cloud Atlas by David Mitchel (6 great stories about where we are coming from and where we are going, cleverly linked in a breathtakingly ambitious big idea).
Rocky Erikson anthology (new to me, amazingly gifted, catchy stuff, with an interesting back story).
Four Lions - recent british film that balances tragedy and comedy beautifully when a four friends join the Jihad.

How do you choose just one? I guess growing up in the Blue Mountains was amazing, although I only appreciate it now when I go back and realize how beautiful it is. Going on a lazy cycle tour with some good friends in Norther France in 2008 was the best travel experience so far, ce bon!

I'm a good cook, and have a knack for finding good places to shop and eat food. In my work, I help colleagues design and apply social research, and know a bit about behaviour change and evaluation research. I'm learning italian and impro acting right now, and would like to practice with others. I'm interested in learning and doing more gardening.
