Join Couchsurfing to see Kelly’s full profile. It’s free!
I'm a New Zealander living in Shanghai, China studying Mandarin for a year. I hope to spend some of this year travelling through the rest of China and its surrounding countries.
I'm sociable but also very independent- always up for hanging out with good people and going on adventures, but am equally content on my own, reading/writing/walking and retreating into my head.
When it comes to experiences, I take an open-minded, spontaneous approach, and prefer to go with the flow rather than organise my travel plans too rigorously in advance.
I love noodles.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
My old housemate used to host Couchsurfers at our place, and they definitely had a more personal and thorough experience of our city than they would've in a hostel or hotel. I hope to have the same experience, and meet interesting people who live locally.

Music, Movies, and Books
I like movies a lot- watching them and also writing about them. I'm especially into horror/genre cinema, but my taste is still quite varied. Directors whose work I like include David Cronenberg, David Lynch, John Carpenter, Ingmar Bergman, Quentin Dupieux, Roy Andersson, Yorgos Lanthimos and many more I can't think of right now. Movie recommendations are always welcome and given freely. Even when I'm travelling, you'll still catch me at the cinema fairly often workin' on my screen tan.
Currently, my Chinese language textbook is the only book on heavy rotation. I'm a cliche so my favourite novel is Nineteen Eighty-Four. I read a lot of non-fic with a particular interest in Chinese modern history and perspectives with a leftist bent.
I'm in a post-hardcore/screamo band with two friends and do vocals that sound like a dying cat.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
A brief stint as a stand-up comedian, a venture which my anxiety swiftly quashed.
Teach, Learn, Share
I could teach you:
A really great card game
English if you're not fluent
Any opportunity to practice speaking Chinese will be met with nervous enthusiasm!
What I Can Share with Hosts
Cook a vegan meal with you
Listen to you (I think I'm a good listener)
Make basic bicycle repairs and help tune your bike
Accompany you on trips, whether it's to the movies or the mountains
Good movie recommendations
