Novo Hamburgo is between Porto Alegre and the Serra Gaúcha (Gramado, Canela, Bento Gonçalves, Garibaldi, Caxias do Sul), so if you're renting a car to explore the mountains and your flight arrives late at the day you can spend the night here, it's less than an hour from Porto Alegre and go the next day.
