About Me

Very laid back, had a good run in the political/corporate world in Washington, DC, got bored, retired at 54, moved to the beach in south Florida. Some family things forced me to move back to Annapolis for a while but I think they are about resolved and plan to head back south soon. I'm a bartender now (again, have done it off and on forever) because, having no self-discipline, I must have some external structure imposed on me. I'm pretty entertaining, fun to hang out and drink beer with, know at least a little about a lot of things, and can talk easily with just about anyone (i.e. bartender job description)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm not entirely sure where I want to land on this go round. I last lived in Jupiter, FL and had a business in Palm Beach Gardens. I totally like the area, but am thinking I might go farther south, maybe to the Keys. Anyway I have to check out the bartender job markets in any place I think I like so I'm looking at a couple days here, a couple days there kind of thing.
I'm also toying with the idea of just doing a beach town tour, starting with the Maryland-Delaware beaches and just continuing south along the coast till I find my perfect beach town. If I have to, I'll U-turn in Miami and work my way up the gulf coast beaches through the Florida panhandle to Alabama. Although, I much prefer the ocean to the gulf.

Interests

Pretty run of the mill. I suppose. Texas hold'em, shooting pool, obviously anything to do with the beach/water. I've been bonefishing off Islamorada and that was awesome. Halloween in Key West is reliably entertaining. I like amusement parks, especially the monster roller coasters. Good restaurants and dive bars. On a broader level, I am a news junkie, I read a couple of the blogs on both the right and left daily--usually disagreeing with both sides.
I'm not much of a traveler, an odd admission I guess for someone on a site like this, but I've rarely found the reward worth the hassle of going. I've been to asia, it was interesting but.....meh.

Music, Movies, and Books

On music, I lived in Texas for a number of years and developed an appreciation of country. Not so much the "pop" country played by most of the big stations but some of the older stuff--Crystal Gayle, Roseanne Cash, etc. My default radio station setting is alt rock--vampire weekend, lord huron, Jack White and so on. Given my age, all the 60's bands, John Fogerty and Creedence, Edgar Winter, Van Halen, Warren Zevon, Van Morrison--although I have been hearing that stuff for over 40 years so it's starting to wear thin.
I don't get to the movies much but when I do I want to be entertained, not have to figure out some message. Thus, I lean towards simplistic action adventure stuff. Juvenile? I guess, but entertaining.
I am an avid reader and over any and all genres. I usually sort of binge--I really like the old style "noire" genre detective things. Also podcasts along those lines.

Countries I’ve Visited

Hong Kong, Taiwan
