About Me

ABOUT ME

Well, all my [preexisting] friends on Couchsurfing say I am an interesting people to talk to, so there's that. I have a weird, occasionally twisted sense of humor that I seem to be charming enough to pull off most of the time (though my years-long habit of lying about my name to new people had mixed results...).

I am genuinely interested in people and, often, their life stories, which makes me a good listener most of the time.

PHILOSOPHY

There are two most important things: love (in all its forms), and stories (fact, fiction, and ongoing).

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

None, proper. Some of my friends are surfers, and I joined one for lunch with another surfer - which brings the grand total of people I have met through couchsurfing to... one. Zero actual couches (etc.) involved.

Interests

Jazz and blues music, swing dance. Homebrew vaporware games.

Fan (as opposed to practitioner) level interest in nearly all science, soft and hard.

Currently trying to justify to myself the cost of setting up a ball pit.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: dark humor, no-nonsense action heroes, and musicals. Drop Dead Gorgeous, Gross Pointe Blank, The Whole Nine Yards; Transporter, Taken, the Nolan Batman incarnation; Enchanted, Pirates of Penzance, the Music Man.

Music: Lots. Especially jazz. Not (most) country, rap, or very heavy metal.

Books: witty allegories and science fiction. The Last Unicorn, the Phantom Tollbooth; things by Roger Zelazny or Neal Stephenson.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I honestly could not name anything off the top of my head -- and probably not a lot deeper, either. I have fun with life but few things stand out spectacularly (I mean, it's all just life, right?), and those that do aren't really a matter of "awe." I have a few good stories but moments of awe, for me, are typically the relatively mundane things like a beautiful sunset or a crystal clear night sky.

Teach, Learn, Share

I have a relatively deep (for some random dude) knowledge of a lot of things, but it's shallow compared to the slightest degree of specialization. I subscribe to Science even though most of it is over my head, because each issue is about 70% fascinating to me.
