About Me

It is always difficult to speak about myself... Guess I am a friendly, easy-going guy. I am also of the restless kind... like really restless. Have been moving from one place to another about once in 12 months since almost 10 years now. But recently I am getting better at living in one place for a bit longer.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Initially I did not want to set up an account here. But when I was walking through Eastern Europe, it became kind of necessary. While I was in the countryside I just camped outside and in bigger cities I would try to get contacts through friends, friends of friends or just random encounters. However, that last part prove to be difficult. Sometimes you just can't expect people to host a dirty, stinking hiker whenever he turns up at their door.

So I gave in and tried couchsurfing... to get at least one hot shower every few weeks. And, of course, to get a more personal impression of the area than just by walking through.

Some years later I still have this account, and since I have settled down (for a while) I decided to give back to the community that gave me so much and literally saved my ass a few times and open the doors to my flat ( if I am at home)

Interests

As you probably already guessed, I love being outdoors (most of the time), I love nature and the energy I get from it. Apart from that, I enjoy to read, write, to watch pedestrians while having a coffee and to have a few drinks with other nice people.
Basically I am up for almost everything and - if you catch me on a good day - I'll be the first one to steal horses with.
Really.
Let's steal some horses.

Oh, and I enjoy cooking (as long as someone else does the dishes)

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: Almost anything with a good guitar riff. Punk, Rock, Folk... Aside from that I enjoy a good Dub/reggae party.
Movies: Really depending on the mood and time of day. Can't say i have a favorite genre nor particular movie.
Books: In recent years I enjoyed especially travel literature... Patrick Leigh Fermor actually inspired me to do this walk. Now since I am on the road I try to make use of my downtime and get some of the classics done: Gogol, Twain, Hemmingway, Dickens, Hesse... Sometimes no easy stuff, but I got lots of space in my mind to fill these days.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Crossed Eastern Europe by foot without getting run over by a truck.

Teach, Learn, Share

I love to learn new languages, most of the time getting myself in way over my head and not learning much at all in the end. But I'm always happy to learn new phrases, songs, poems and such. Apart from that I obviously love to hear stories. Live stories, crazy stories, made-up stories... maybe I should mention that I will most probably use any of these stories in the book that I am working on at the moment.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can share some German? But seriously, why would anyone learn German if not for work? I really love cooking and would love to do so at my host's home. Don't get much opportunity for that while I am on the road. I could try to cook something in a Vietnamese style, depending on the ingredients I can find. Of course, I will also share stories. Stories of sheer luck, stories of bad luck, stories of utter mischief... got quite a few, if I can remember them. Depending on how long I will stay, I will also be happy to help with anything around the house. Clean the bathroom, fix the sink? Just name it.
