About Me

READ FIRST: I have nothing against people passing through for a day on their travels, but I am a bit tired of getting requests from people who arrive in the evening and leave the next morning with no interest in seeing the city itself... Not that I'll never host somebody just passing through (I live on the Camino de Santiago, after all!), but please remember that my house is a house, not a hotel!

CURRENT MISSION

To laugh and dance and see the world. (Rire, danser, voir le monde.)

ABOUT ME

We started this account as a mother (Leigh Ann) and daughter (Shelby) who are best friends and love to travel together. We got started CouchSurfing when we planned our first "big" trip to Europe in 2011. Currently, Shelby uses the account to surf and to host.

We are both very open-minded, easy-going, adventurous souls. Although we have specific things we want to do and see while we are traveling, we mostly just want to "breath it all in" - so we will certainly welcome any and all information and advice from our hosts.

PHILOSOPHY

What a difficult question! We are both resisting the urge to fill this with cliché but nonetheless accurate quotes.

Some of our well-used phrases:

Normal is boring.

Don't sweat the small stuff, because most all problems are small stuff in the grand scheme of life.

You can laugh about it or you can cry about it; we've already cried about it, so we might as well laugh about it.

Both of us try to live our lives as caring, compassionate people (and Shelby greatly looks up to Leigh Ann in that regard!). Our family (which includes son/brother Landon) is unusually close and we believe that life is better lived with good friends nearby. We do our best to be honest, generous, kind, and sincere.

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

We were mother-daughter CouchSurfing buddies for a month in 2011 and will do it again in the future! Now, I (Shelby) host and occasionally surf, and am getting involved in revitalising the Limoges CS group!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Our first big adventure together and first experience with CS was a month-long trip to Italy, France, and England. While it was stressful at times not to know what we were doing at any given moment (and, one time, not knowing where we would sleep that night), we were overwhelmed by the generosity we were shown. Our CS hosts treated us like members of their families, and we cannot thank them enough. In a way, our time spent surfing renewed our faith in humanity. Now we want to do what we can to repay that kindness by becoming hosts ourselves.

Interests

Leigh Ann and Shelby: TRAVEL, sewing, gardening, laughing (VOYAGER, coudre, faire du jardinage, rire)

Shelby: politics, reading, organizing things obsessively/color coding, thinking, word games, going out of my comfort zone, learning foreign languages (I speak French!), dancing (especially salsa and swing) (la politique, lire, organiser n'importe quoi avec obsession, les jeux de lettres, quitter ma zone de confort, apprendre les langues étrangères, danser [en particulier le swing et le salsa])

Leigh Ann: my children, destroying Shelby's obsessively-organized and color-coded projects (:D), writing, life-learning, growing old gracefully... but fighting it every step of the way

Music, Movies & Books

Books: Harry Potter. Plus anything that passes under my nose.

Movies: I LOVE L'Auberge Espagnole, and I have a guilty pleasure for terrible chick flicks.

Music: Lots of people say they listen to "all kinds of music" but they don't mean it. I actually do listen to everything from chill acoustic music to rap, bagpipes to jazz, Edith Piaf to trashy hip hop. Except heavy metal, because I don't really see how it's music.

Leigh Ann: watching two dynamic children becoming wonderful, productive adults

Shelby: I have picked figs by headlight in Italy, danced myself to happiness in Seattle, jumped in to the Mediterranean at the calanques in Marseille, hiked Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh, and been surrounded by people and friends I never could have imagined I would meet. I have appreciated moments where I have seen, heard, smelled, tasted, felt, and LIVED with every fiber of my being.

I've also learned a second language and have gone to university, so that's pretty cool, too.

Teach, Learn, Share

If you want to discuss French-English grammar or theories in social science... talk to Shelby. If you want to talk about children or the grand scheme of Life... talk to Leigh Ann.

Anything else... we're open for discussion. We dearly love to learn about anything, any time.
