About Me

MISSION

Update October '25: due to my incurable brain tumor I won't be hosting anybody.

=====

My wife Karin-Marijke and I love driving minor roads and roaming around, getting lost and seeing what the world has to offer – tasting it, feeling it, hearing it and smelling it.

We equally love putting one foot in front of the other, tent and stove on our backs, as we venture on long-distance hikes across the world.

ABOUT ME

I am a Dutchman, creative person, photographer, adventurer. I have been on the road full-time with my wife Karin-Marijke in our vintage Land Cruiser since 2003. We sold everything we owned and started driving east. During our first 3.5 years on the road we drove from the Netherlands via Iran, Pakistan, India, Bhutan and Bangladesh to Southeast Asia.

From January 2007 – December 2016, we drove to every remote corner of all 13 countries in South America.

November 2016 – 2024: After having hiked the 750-km Baekdu-Daegan Mountain Ridge in South Korea, we ferried our Land Cruiser to Japan, revisited South Korea and shipped the Land Cruiser to Vladivostok (2018).

We 4x4ed Mongolia, backpacked in Northeast China, returned to the Land Cruiser to visit more of Siberia and travel the Stans (Central Asian) countries.

During the long winters we parked the Land Cruiser and did long-distance hikes in Turkey, Jordan, Israel, Nepal and Armenia. We also had another go at the northeast of India (Seven Sisters States) for three months on a classic Royal Enfield.

In 2024 our lives took a drastic turn in Cyprus as I was diagnosed with brain cancer stage 4 and immediately had surgery. We flew back to the Netherlands for full chemotherapy and radiation treatment. My goal is to run and walk the cancer out of my system. I completed several half marathons and - cherry on the cake - a full marathon in April 2025!

But I’m not done yet. Karin-Marijke and I are currently hiking the epic, 2500K Sultan's Trail from Vienna to Istanbul. We'll be passing through Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria and Turkey.

We hope to meet you on this great adventure! Meeting people is always the best experience on any journey.

Would you be able to meet or host us (which can also mean having us pitch our tent in your garden)? Let us know!

PHILOSOPHY

Every mile tells a story...
We are learning new things every day...

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Since we are constantly on the road, it's generally us asking others to accommodate us. However, if any would like to experience the world of overlanding, feel free to join us in our Land Cruiser for a couple of days :-)

CS for us is about sharing and learning. We enjoy doing our share by cooking for our hosts or helping out with other activities in and/or around the house. If you are interested, we will share stories about our travels and life in general, and/or spend time with you downtown or in outdoor activities. We meet new people with an open mind and take it from there.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

We have stayed with people through ‘Hospitality Club’ for several years. My first experiences with CS, in Costa Rica and Panama, were inspiring, and we have met CSers in South America, the Russia, China, Kazakhstan, and elsewhere.

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm open to everything out there. If I don't like it I will put it away, close it down or turn it off, but first I want to see what it offers to the mind, body or soul.
