I can't live anywhere flat (I've found through experience), and I need the great outdoors in large quantities.
I Enjoy having new experiences, discovering new places and the whole process of discovery in general. I have a never-ending pursuit of knowledge - always learning.
I'd been living in Iceland since late summer 2012 studying for a graduate degree in sustainable energy and geothermal engineering. I have been back in the States part of this last year, but will be graduating in a bit -- soon to be heading down unknown roads and experiences once again.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I've hosted a little and surfed a bit more than that. Interactions with other CSers (in person) have been great.
(So far), I only get responses from maybe 10-20% of people... :/
-I guess because of my XY chromosomes.
(Please make CSing a better place than that).
Listening to music, messing around on my computer (movies, games, etc), playing pool (billiards), backpacking, fishing, camping, shooting my bow, various snow sports (snowboarding, tubing, & snow-shoeing), making/drinking coffee (espresso), various water sports (wake-boarding, cliff jumping, river rafting, & kayaking), skydiving, rock-climbing, 4-wheeling, spelunking, and lifting weights..... Acquiring and utilizing all manner of knowledge, eating new and exotic types of food, finding new exotic types of food to eat :) , getting dirt tans and soaking up sun.
Academic: sustainable design and renewable energy development.

Music, Movies, and Books
Music: I like music with good rhythm and fantastic vocals. My favorite band is Chevelle. (Favorite Icelandic band is Sólstafir). Overall rock music (that fits the bill) is my favorite, but there are songs and sections of other genres that I enjoy as well.
Books: The Selfish Gene, The Ancestor's Tale, The Grand Design, LOTR, Cradle to Cradle & The Natural Step, ASOFAI (Game of Thrones), Weir's - The Martian.
Movies: I love to watch movies (probably more than I should)... My favorite movie of all time is Memento. A few other favorites are: LS&2 Smoking Barrels, Layer Cake, Zombieland, Fargo, Snatch, Batman Begins, Oh Brother Where Art Thou?, Donnie Darko, Chocolat, Braveheart, Gladiator, Shooter, No Country for Old Men, Troy, The Big Lebowski, Advent Children, Black Hawk Down, Zeitgeist, The Fountain, Die Falscher, District 9, Das Leben Der Anderen, The World's Fastest Indian, Whale Rider, Kingdom of Heaven, Indiana Jones (Raiders & Last Crusade), Mongol, Moon, 9th Company, Munich, Kung-fu Hustle, Dumb and Dumber, Monty Python, Red Dragon, Shawshank Redemption, Fight Club, The Mothman Prophecies, Old Boy, Fellowship of the Ring, the 13th Warrior and Un prophète.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I've been hit by ball lightning... It didn't hurt though, just felt like a large moth hitting my head -- I was on my computer sitting in my room with a thunderstorm going outside when I felt something brush against the back of my head. The weird(er) part -- The ball floated across my room at walking pace, exited my door, *then* turned 90 degrees and floated down the hallway. A couple seconds later, I jumped up and chased it through the doorway, but didn't catch up to it or see it in the next room.
and for something I've done:
I spend a month+ hitchhiking through Iceland with two friends -- We circled the island by hitchhiking, ferry/ship, and several multi-day backpacking trips, going through some of the most remote areas in Iceland -- all for less than $200. I've also crossed the continental divide by backpack in the United States, twice.
Teach, Learn, Share
I'll just leave some quotes that I identify with:
"Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts." - Author, philosopher, physicist, humanist.
Entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem - Occum’s Razor
"Not all who wander are lost". 20th century Author / Father of high fantasy literature (Tolkien).
"Measure twice, cut once" -Maxim
"We don't inherit the land from our ancestors... we borrow it from our children". -Native American proverb.
"Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe." - Author / Father of Science Fiction (H.G. Wells).
"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." :)
"They must find it difficult...those who have taken authority as the truth, rather than truth as the authority." 19th century poet / Self taught Egyptologist (Gerald Massey).
"Losing an illusion makes you wiser than finding a truth". - 19th century author (Ludwig Borne).
"Be prepared" - Founder of scouting (Baden Powell)
"Believe those who are seeking the truth. Doubt those who find it." -20th century author / Nobel prize winner (André Gide).
"The amount of seeds within a fruit can be counted… the amount of fruit within a seed can never be counted.
