About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Drink ALL the European beer (classily).

ABOUT ME

Since it asked me what my best friends would say about me, I took the liberty of asking one of them.

"You're Canadian You're incredibly smart. You care about others. You're trustworthy. You keep your commitments. You'd rather have fun than do your schoolwork You like beer. You stay up way too late lol. You're easy to talk to. You believe in God but are not hypocritical or judgmental. "

So, that definitely capture part of me, but I guess I should say some things about myself as well. I am very easy going, rarely stress about anything, and can take care of myself in any environment. I do my best to be an easy guest to take care of, but I also like to get t know people and hang out and do fun things.

PHILOSOPHY

Theology colours the way I see things, and so my own approach to life has been to recognize the good in things and in people. I try to appreciate wherever I am, and seek the beauty in things. I don't like to focus on the negative aspects of things, even though I do recognize them. I do my best not to judge people, because I've seen how hateful I can be to those who really bother me (think family). I do my best to listen to others and get to know them, and even if I don't become friends with everyone, I can appreciate who they are. I love getting to know people, and trying to help them with their problems if I can. But even if I can't, I like to listen, it lets me understand people better.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Participate in what? Couchsurfing? At the moment, I am unable to host, as I am living at school in a dorm. I also haven't had the need to stay at anyone's place yet. However, I've participated in a few activities this summer, which have been great.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Two so far. First, I went to a local microbrewery to hear anther CSer's band play. Good people, good music, good beer, good food, and all around a great night.

My favourite though was going to the orchestra and fireworks with about 12 other CSer's. That was just a great night. Tons of food was brought, and we had a picnic with a live orchestra, plus solo pianist, playing Tchaikovsky in the background. And then, to cap the night off, we had fireworks. Can you really get much better than that?

Interests

Spending time with friends is probably my favourite thing to do, regardless of what we are doing. It can be either deep conversations, or just climbing the roof of a local school, I'm cool with whatever.

I'm into all sorts of drinks. In my dorm I have tons of loose leaf teas, an espresso machine, burr grinder, coffee press, syrups, beans, and more. I have been expanding my beer tastes, and currently I'm trying to get used to IPAs (too hoppy). I love a good spiced rum (not Captain Morgan's) or mixed drink, and like wine as well, though I need to learn more about it. I'm looking to do my own beer and wine eventually.

Also, reading takes up a fair bit of my time. I read lots of different things, but my favourite genre is probably American Literature in the vein of Steinbeck of Fitzgerald. Dostoevsky is great too.

Also: Computer, video games, longboarding, outdoors, hammocks, swimming, cliff jumping, and plenty more.

Music, Movies, and Books

Way too many to list. Some favourites though:
Movies: Christopher Nolan, Little Miss Sunshine, Zoolander, Wes Anderson
Music: Regina Spektor, Mumford and Sons, The Civil Wars, Sufjan Stevens, Florence and the Machine, Chopin
Books: To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee, East of Eden - John Steinbeck, The Brothers Karamozov - Fyodor Dostoevesky, The Supper of the Lamb - Robert Farrar Capon.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Hanging out for a day and a half on Caye Caulker in Belize. It's the only time I've gone snorkeling, but it was incredible. At one point we had 30+ sting rays swimming around our feet. So cool.

One time I was out hiking on a mountain with some friends, and after the trail ended I just followed the sun for a little bit. Suddenly the trees broke and I was on a rock shelf with a perfect view of everything around me.

Teach, Learn, Share

Theology, certainly. It is what I'm going to school for, after all. I heard a quote once, and unfortunately I don't know who said it and I'm probably going to butcher it. However, it was along the lines of, "The great downfall of the church is it's failure to proclaim joy." In other words, the church is so often caught up in what it sees as wrong that it becomes blind to everything good that is going on. I think a lot of people have a bad understanding of Christianity because of this, and that's why I love talking about theology.

As for learning, there's plenty. The first one that comes to mind is how to tend bar. I enjoy my alcohol, all sorts, and would love to learn how to make different drinks and distinguish between different types.
