There is no better way to experience new cultures than to stay with residents of the area. I love seeing sites from a locals' perspective and meeting people from around the world, from all walks of life. CS is an amazing way to build lasting friendships and share knowledge.

As a note, I have had several successful couch surfing experiences during my 5 months abroad, but they were booked with a friends account and the positive reviews are there :)
