À propos de moi

Hi there!

It's Laura. I'm 25, almost 26 though... if it matters. Recently though I have felt like I'm getting older. My skin's getting dry, some wrinkles have formed around the eyes. In some ways I've always been old. My soul is old. A psychic told my mother that in my past life I lived in France and was a beautiful aristocrat, who played many instruments and entertained the dinner guests. Believe this or not... I don't even know.

In this life I still play instruments, flute and piano to be exact. But I'm fully Estonian and Nordic (like we Estonians like to call ourselves, I don't mind being called Baltic though, it's okay). I have pale skin, freckles, potato peel coloured hair (yes, that's a thing in Estonia). I have huge classes (not yet photographed) that make me look like my mum in the 90s.

I currently work as a culture and music journalist in my local newspaper. But I studied Creative Events and Experience Design in the United Kingdom and Norway. I'm used to change and adapt easily. If a new country has some hummus and good tea, I'm in! I'm a vegetarian, but don't judge others. My best friend eats meat, so we keep the world balanced.

I consider myself to be an introvert, but living abroad has definitely turned me into a more social and easy-going person. I'm super easy to get along with. My mum says I'm too understanding and reasonable sometimes. This could be a good and bad quality. You choose. I'm patient, but stubborn. Active, but lazy. Happy, but melancholic.

I live by one of my favourite philosopher Søren Kierkekaard's thought that there's no universal truth and every person has their own truth and freedom to believe.

Pourquoi je suis sur Couchsurfing

Let's start with a cliché: I love travelling and learning about new cultures. Though I value and love Estonian culture and language and will describe myself as an Estonian with pride until I die, my heart seeks for adventure. I can't stay still, so I search for opportunities that take me out of my comfort zone and maybe fly me miles away.
I've given it a lot of thought: maybe I'm escaping from something, maybe it's just in my nature.

There's great beauty in having our country borders open. 20 years ago it was nearly impossible (at least for an Estonian) to meet international people. Now I can put the books down and learn about the culture for real.

Some of my best friends are non-Estonian. I met them while travelling. It has taught me that different nationalities, people and cultures have more in common than we like to acknowledge.

Why stay in a hotel or a hostel? Why even travel if you're only going to follow the tourist book and map? I would like to know the dodgiest corners and the locals' favourite restaurants, parks that smell like pee and funny stories.

Couchsurfing is one way to learn history and walk on Google Maps with a local.

MUSIC
My first love was Kings Of Leon and my friends wouldn't know Laura without the four Followills and their dear grandfather Leon.
But you'd be surprised to see my Spotify playlist: the range is all over the place. From Bullet For My Valetine, Oasis, Joy Division, The Smiths, RY X, Biffy Clyro, My Chemical Romance, George Ezra, Ben Howard to Billy Eilish, BTS, Lana Del Ray, Harry Styles, Amber Run...
As I studied the music industry and am passionate about music, I am open to different genres and musicians that manage to create good music. I do believe the "good" is different for everyone. But I know it when I hear it.
