About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Scouting!

ABOUT ME

I’m an Australian who is also a British citizen who lives in Germany. I've been travelling since before I could walk. I took my first steps in California, I think. I’ve been to a good 30-something countries since then, including living in Moscow for a year, visiting Kazakhstan, hiking in the french alps, and riding in the back of a truck in Vanuatu.

I love foreign languages; I learned French at school for ages, and then lived in Normandy for a couple of months. Russian was my major in my BA at the University of Melbourne, and after my year in Moscow and my friendship with my beloved Ruslan, I’d say my Russian is pretty schmick. I currently live in Berlin with my wonderful girlfriend Jette. She’s a very patient teacher and my German is coming along nicely.

I want to be an actor. I’ve been doing theatre for about six years, I guess, including roles in The Taming of the Shrew (I played Petruchio, or Heath Ledger from Ten Things, as he’s more commonly known), Macbeth (Macduff), and Twelfth Night (Sebastian). I think the UK is the place to be for theatre and film, so I’m aiming to get into one of those dastardly London drama schools.

PHILOSOPHY

It's better to regret the things you did do than the things you didn't do. When I'm eighty years old, sitting in my rocking chair with my pipe, I'd rather say to myself 'yes, I probably shouldn't have jumped off that bridge that time in Bosnia' or 'why on earth did I eat the insect that that fellow gave me?' than 'If only I'd gone to St. Petersburg, just once.' I do believe in success, and I think it can be important to be pre-emptive, but you should always remember to take things as they come, and that the experience that never occured to you before it happened will probably be the biggest adventure of all.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I heard someone say a while ago that if you're unsure about what to respond to a question that starts with 'do you want to try...' the answer is probably yes. I think he's right. No innuendo meant. I spent an afternoon in Munich falling over in an ice-skating ring because I'd never done it before (and I'm not hugely co-ordinated), but it was a new experience and I had a fantastic time.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I’ve had couchsurfing for years but I’m only getting around to using it now! I’m really excited.

Interests

Theatre and film, music (I’m learning to sing- slow and painful, but drumming comes more naturally), bikes (fixed gear and touring), hiking, cooking, weightlifting, recording audiobooks, reading to my niece and nephew.

Matt Corby, Nathaniel Rateliff, Schubert, James Blake, August Burns Red, Son Little, Brahms, Karnivool, Kendrick, Leon Vynehall, Tchaikovsky.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I was riding a bike in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. There was a girl, she would have been nine or ten, and she was riding in the opposite direction to me. When we passed each other, she gave me a fantastic smile and a little wave and she said hello in English. There was no taint of tourism in that smile, no cynicism, no traces of the war with the west or the uncertainty of her own future. It was completely innocent and completely honest.

Teach, Learn, Share

I’d love to help you with your English, if you’re interested. If you’re wondering what the big deal about Shakespeare is, it would be an honour to share the answer I’ve found. I can help you with your deadlift form or to tighten up your motivation letter. I’d love to learn more about buildings, about art, bicycles, history, barbering.
