About Me

To reduce the number of strangers in the world...it is hard to not like a place or culture you know a bit more!

I am from the NYC metro area but have moved around a lot. In High School I spent some time living in Switzerland and then I went to a United World College in New Mexico. I graduated from Tufts in Boston last year, worked for a year with public health insurance and outreach in with younger, unstably housed folks and am now study nursing at Columbia.

I love running, cooking, traveling (both to meet people and see places) and exploring our city as well. I love tea, coffee, pets and learning how others live their lives.

I often travel with my best friend and partner Sascha. He is photographed in my profile, and I am happy to provide more information on him if he is traveling with me!

The first thing that comes to my mind is a Dr. Seuss quotation: Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind dont matter and those who matter wont mind.
I believe in putting oneself out there and trying new things...it may be uncomfortable, but that is how we learn!

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

I love hosting, tour guiding, and visiting others in any capacity. I love cooking for the people I stay with and showing people around the cities I have come to know and love!

PLEASE ACCEPT THIS SIGNIFICANT APOLOGY: Having a CSurfing page in NYC as a host is VERY difficult. I receive at least 3-5 requests each day...and I am not even downtown! During a busy month in school over the holiday season and finals, I neglected my surfing profile. I forgot to put that I was unable to host. My response rate has therefore plummeted. It is difficult to keep up on here, and I apologize if I contributed toward any difficulty by not responding quickly. I will try to keep my page better updated in the future, and I look forward to hosting more when I can and being the best houseguest I can be!

I love running, cooking and baking vegan treats (and love showing my hosts different and interesting foods), knitting and getting lost in cities. I love riding pubic transit and people watching in my free time.

Whenever I can, I take trips. I have been known to impulsively drive up to Montreal or go hiking with a friend after speaking about it just over brunch.

I also love independent and foreign cinema. I enjoy existential and coming of age themes. I like thinking about how different communities are structured and love living in and visiting different kinds of homes. Co-parenting, communal living, rural homes, apartment buildings--just seeing and thinking about the ways in which we interact based on how and where we live fascinates me.

I studied public health and sociology in school and am heading back to school to be a nurse practitioner. I spend a lot of time thinking about healthcare accessibility and disparities in outcomes--especially among those with insecure housing, and those who identify as LGBT.

Music, Movies & Books

I love Ska (like Reel Big Fish), Reggae (like Bob Marley), Classical (like Bach and contemporary stuff like Carl Orff), classic rock (from glam stuff like Queen to The Beatles and ACDC. Also love alternative stuff like Passion Pit and Cake and love a lot of Spanish and French music! I love Jazz as well.

Sascha: I come from a family of musicians and am a member of several vocal groups myself. As far as singing goes, I'm a fan of larger choral pieces (though not opinionated much further) and similarly for listening, I enjoy breadth more than the depth of any particular genre.

Books...I have many favorites. I love Brave New World, Animal Farm and The Prophet...I guess I like social commentaries?

Anything with the Will Ferrel type I dont like...pretty much everything else is game. Anything foreign or "cerebral" on netflix.

One Amazing Thing I've Done

Burning Man was one of the coolest experiences I have had. I went with a camp that helps set up the electrical infrastructure of the festival. The entire festival is focused on creativity and unique forms of expression, and watching the city be created from the blank palate of the salt flat landscape was stunning.

When I was in 8th grade I ran away to San Francisco. That city always has had an allure for me. I will end up there some day. This particular story is a good one though--I will tell it to you over a beverage.

I went camping without any tools or equipment other than warm clothing and matches (read: no tent) in the winter in Vermont. I used to not like camping or hiking, but after that extreme experience I have grown to love camping and hiking when I have proper equipment!

Taking a series of busses, vans, cabs and hitchhiking from Prague to Valencia was pretty amazing.

Speaking with strangers always strikes awe in me. Whether couch surfing, on the subway, in a park or on a plane I love having a blip of insight into someone else's world.
