ABOUT ME

two people- in happy long term relationship.
I'm an artist ( a jeweller & sculptor), he's a computer geek. I have no idea what he is talking about when he tells me what went wrong at work today (I got lost when they changed from co-axial cables) , he's got a good nose for what makes art good. We (collectively) love books and cats and used to own a bookshop. A truly indecent number of books came home to us, no, really! It was greedy.
One of us eats anything that moves including black pudding and black jellybeans, the other one is mainly vegetarian who likes black fungus. you can guess who is who....

PHILOSOPHY

to be mindful. to be compassionate. to honour all beings including ourselves.
Margie is a Vipassana meditator. She also teaches meditation to little kids at the local school.
Bugs is rockin' with Richard Dawkins.
A good sense of humour helps us through pretty much anything.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Our favourite times travelling have been when people we meet show us how they live and we can give something back as well.... We've done Wwoofing in the past on organic farms for the same reasons- learn something, give something back :) so we look forward to participating in the project in the near future. Happy to host couchsurfers who for some odd reason want to come to a tiny island in the middle of the South Pacific.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Drinking vodka until 3 am on a friend-of-a-friend's couch in Moscow, 4x4 driving to their dacha and sweltering in their sauna! Have wwoofed in France, and surfed a great many couches unofficially and had many friends stay as well. Our philosophy is to be the best houseguests you have ever had. You'll always have your washing up done and fresh flowers on the table.

in no particular order....art which moves or shakes me (Bill Viola, Anish Kapoor), organic and alternative lifestyles (we live in a solar powered house we designed ourselves),world music, foreign cinema, literature, cooking, travel, history, science, spirituality, wunderkabinets and dusty natural history museums,gardening, ...oh and don't forget Rugby (that would be Bugs there, Margie thinks sport is a cruel joke taking funding from the arts, but does enjoy the Haka)...the outdoors,cycling, Bugs is a squash player and a firefighter, I am on local community art committees.

Very wide tastes might include Italo Calvino, Jared Diamond, Ian Banks, China Mieville, James Joyce, Paul Bowles, Camus, Ondaatje, Primo Levi, Murikami, Ishiguro, Thoreau, Kafka, Isherwood, Tim Winton, Kate Grenville, Thea Astley, so many others. Bugs is into sci-fi and fantasy and science books.
World music good. Alternative good. Currently in my studio I am listening to Bela Fleck, Leonard Cohen, Regina Spector, Fat Freddy's Drop,Suijan Stevens, Rupert Wainwright, Giles Peterson compilations, Antony & the Johnsons, John Butler Trio, Fela Kuti, Tuvan throat singers.
I'd say Bugs wouyld be listening to similar on his Ipod but throw in some more indie-rock and grunge for him like Foo-fighters.
Movies: Coen Brothers, Almodovar, Kusturica, anything foreign language and left-of-centre.
