Once I found myself riding a magnificent white beast named Gus through the dusty Sand Hills of Nebraska. We were staying at a working dude ranch where you paid to wake up early and ride for hours under the relentless sun. At one point we were tasked with moving a herd from one pasture to another, and I had found at least thirty more on a hill out of sight from below. The ranch owner asked, "Will you get them or should I?" Turning Gus towards the hill, I hollered at the cattle without any clue as to what I was doing. Think, "Go cows, go!" To this day, cantering across the prairie alongside a stampeding herd was one of the most real and exciting moments of my life.
