My current mission is to discover the whole world and then the whole galaxy!! And I guess couch surfing is a good way to start :-)

ABOUT ME

Hi world,

Well, name's Maarten, I'm from the Netherlands. I spend most days studying psychology at the Utrecht University. To earn some cash I work in a nice little restaurant in my hometown of Leiden.

Stuff I like to do is playing my guitar and sing!! Yeah, music is one of my greatest passions, the thing I like to do most. I go to concerts occasionally (not as often as I would like, got to work on that :)) and I'm looking forward to the Rock Werchter festival in Belgium this summer.

Other things I like to do is running (do it a few times a week) medieval European martial arts (I get training once a week, it's mainly swordfighting and a bit of unarmed combat). I like travelling a lot, and I love te meet folks from other countries. Last but not least I like to go to the cinema or to bars with my friends.

PHILOSOPHY

Hmm, I don't really have a personal philosophy, but ehm... well enjoy life people!! Sing, love, dance, make music and be friends!!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've just begun participating in this whole couch surfing stuff, but I heard a lot of stories about it, and it seemed like a cool idea to me. I don't have a couch available nowadays, since I live at my parent's place. As soon as I have a place of my own, you can all come sleepin' on my couch!!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I don't have any couch surfing experience yet, but I am really looking forward to get it.

Interests

My biggest interest is music. I like running a lot as well, and I really enjoy swordfighting :) I go to Celtic/pagan/fantasy festivals a few times a year, there are several in my country. I like the open, free, happy fantastic atmosphere at such festivals :) there's music, there's people dancing, laughing, people in weird and amazing fantasy costumes. Just great :)

I like to watch movies a lot, I enjoy brainless ass-kicking action movies just as much as sad, depressing drama stuff. The only movies that don't interest me at all are romantic comedies actually, hate that stuff ;)

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm interested in rock and metal music a lot, but I also take a keen interest in folk and world music. Dropkick Murphy's and Flogging Molly are among my greatest favourites because they mix both these styles.

I'm interested in historical movies mostly, wel I just like almost any kind of movie :)

I don't read much, but I love the stories of H.P. Lovecraft. His writing style is so weird and strange, but so gripping. Never read anything like it.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The craziest thing I did that I can think of right now was going to the Elf Fantasty Fair this year (it's a big fantasy festival in the Netherlands). I went there with my brother dressed up like a two headed ogre-like undead monster. So we had made costume big enough for both of us to fit in :) it was a great day, but we were both happy to get rid of the costume at the end of the day :)
