Books, and artists, and gardening, and old architecture, and traveling, and places with spirit are all important to me. I live between Fes, Morocco and Monterey County, California and have worked in artist residency programs for much of my professional life.

I’m currently trying to get a better understanding of history, particularly of the interaction between the cultures around the Mediterranean. This means reading a lot of books at the same time and starting at maps and the timeline of world history and squinting and trying to figure out how everything fits together. Travel is an important part of that.

I’m a bad student of Arabic and a worse student of Persian, but I have a real longing some day to be able to read in those languages—Jalal ad-Din Rumi and other Sufi texts, the Qur’an, as well as contemporary Arabic writing.

I’d like to learn more about textiles and silk weaving and how buildings are built with mud and straw in the Sahara.
