ABOUT ME

I try to be a good and thoughtful person, and I'm sometimes successful at that. I'm very devoted to my friends, but I do enjoy getting to know new people. I like to sponge up as much knowledge and culture as I can, which necessarily jars me from my comfort zone. I think I fit into a place like Couchsurfing.

PHILOSOPHY

Learn as much as you can, be nice, reduce suffering and power imbalances in the world, and have fun with those you love.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

People want social contact and places to crash in strange locales. I am open to oblige. Hopefully others will be as welcoming.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I hosted couchsurfers from about 2006-2015, but then my bedrooms filled up with roommates, and I had to put hosting on hiatus. You can see all of the references at the bottom of the page for the specifics. It's been quite an experience, with the best connotations of the word implied.

Intereses

My passions are sociological and anthropological research, Japanese animation and comics, educational and social policy, great books, and small fuzzy animals like cats and rabbits. I exercise and watch what I eat for I must. I love travel (like most everyone here), and I don't take vacations so much as quests. The highest peak, the furtherest extreme point, or a site that's important to me are what pull me in my journeys. Basking in the culture often flows from there.

Música, películas y libros

Electronica (particularly trance, house, and happy hardcore) is my signature music taste, followed by an eclectic selection of rock. For movies, the Wachowski brothers seldom fail to disappoint, and I still go teary-eyed at the end of Your Name. I used to be a Neal Stephenson fanboy until Cryptonomicon (don't ask), then I fell into Philip Pullman's Golden Compass trilogy. It's too bad being a prof doesn't leave a lot of time for leisure reading.

I'm a sociologist of culture and educationalist by profession, so we can start there. If you want to learn about anime and the pedagogical processes of Japanese animation fandom in the United States, then I'm probably the couch surfer you want to host. I also know way too much about the history of 20th Century Europe, the Soviet Union, Canada, Japan, and Cuba in addition to that of the U.S.
