Overview
About Me
I've been teaching English at Sumter High School for 20 years. I'm taking the year to travel from Scotland to Japan. I'm writing a blog called Searching For Stella. I'm looking for people who embody the spirit of my mother who passed away in 2011. Stella was a kind and compassionate person who taught first grade for 42 years. She made the world a better place. I believe that her indelible spirit is everywhere in the world, so I'm going to find the people who embody it and write about them.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I think I explained that in my comments above. I will add that I am also being inspired by a student who passed away last year. Katie Carter wanted to be a journalist for National Geographic. She was a member of the student newspaper of which I was the adviser. Her adventurous spirit reminded me of my own desire to travel the world. So, I'm thinking about both Katie and Stella as I make my trek.
Interests
I've been teaching literature for 20 years, but I've also taught journalism and broadcast media. I'm interested in exploring the latter more. I do love to read, but I did less of it over the years. When you're grading essays all of the time, you tend to tire of reading. I love film, and I also love video games. I find both art forms to be inherently linked to literature.

Music, Movies, and Books
I love all sorts of music. I can listen to Rachmaninoff and then indulge in the rap of George Watsky. I enjoy film and game scores. Jeremy Soule is amazing. I also love The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and The Beatles. The last book series I tore through for fun was Game of Thrones. I've also enjoyed the HBO series. The best movie of the year was Deadpool. If you don't believe me, just ask Francis!
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
The best thing I ever have done is have a beautiful and talented daughter.
When I graduated from high school, I spent my first year of college in Sitka, Alaska. That was a pretty cool experience.
Teach, Learn, Share
I've been in the classroom for 20 years, and I've loved it. I've gained so much from my interaction with my students. I view my classroom as a place where people can share their ideas freely. I think that should be the cornerstone of all education. It should be a place of discovery. It has been difficult to leave a place where I am appreciated, but I'm excited to have the opportunity to show my students that anything is possible if you try.
What I Can Share with Hosts
I love to cook, and I'll even wash the dishes. I am really interested in discovering other peoples' stories. The thing that I plan on asking my hosts is this: if I asked you who the most compassionate and kind person was in this town, who would it be and why?
